Ouch!! That happen to me by Baybrook Mall 6 years ago right in front of my work. Fortunately I ran out as they were driving off and got a plate number and saw their faces. Still never got my radio back even though the cops got them.

To piggy back on this thread... I am installing a Pioneer AVIC-X930BT Double DIN HU ($699.00) Is there anything you can do to decrease the chance of being stolen? The Tacoma usually lives in the garage but if I drive it somewhere, I realize as has been mentioned that the nice touch screen double DINS just scream "STEAL ME". Is there any ideas like: Throw a towel over the dash covering the unit? Special Security screws that make it really difficult to get out? or any other ideas that have not already been mentioned? ie: Alarms? Tinted Windows?

I'd be curious to hear what's worked for others.

My old stereo (which was stolen) had a detachable face, but after a while I was too lazy to take it off and carry it around every time, and boom. Stolen.

(My guess would be that a thief would often correctly guess that the face is in the car too most of the time, and even if it's not, by the time they have broken the window to get in, you're already out some significant cash whether they take the stereo or not)

I've even though to myself before - I should just not keep anything of value in the truck at all and leave the doors unlocked. That way if some thief wants to look around and see that nothing is in there, at least they don't have to break the window. Hmmm....

you guys just need to move to canada. seriously.

i leave expensive shit uncovered in the bed in downtown toronto and no one takes it. the thieves we have are too retarded to steal anything valuable. one time my old car did get broken into they took my $8.50 in change and my $10 mag lite but left $2500 worth of brand new engine management equipment (power fc, electronic boost, gauges, wideband o2, etc) that was practically begging to be stolen

I installed a TV in my Dodge. and I had straps going to it, that were secured to dash supports, with torx security screws. I used a strap like a grounding strp. The average car thief is armed with just sparkplug ceramic and a flat blade screw driver. Usually that's all it takes. Nothing is going to stop them from breaking a window. But there are ways to make speakers and stereos and amps much harder to steal, and that way you mentioned is one.

Well I had comprehensive and my radio insured. I have a free rental car until my truck gets fixed. I kept the stock radio and had them put it back in. Though they said there are problems with it because the buttons dont work. Regardless I am selling my truck (been trying to before this happened) so having my stock radio back in kind of helps with taking a hit. I am getting 500 dollars back (I should get more but I decided to pay for the deductible that way so I dont use my money) and with that I will get my 86 legally running so I can park the Taco and not put miles. I am happy overall with leaving with money in my pocket, but it still sucks that I got my truck broken into. A user asked what he could do to keep his DD from getting stolen:TINT THE SHIT out of your windows, dont leave other goods in plane sight (like I did with my ZUNE) it only makes them want to break in more, get a good alarm system (NOT A SHITTY ASS CARBON) and park it in secure places, or if you have to park it on the street; park there there are lights.

alarms only help really if you urself hear it, cus usually in public most ppl just do a quick look and walk away, tint is only legal to a certain index in certain states, and yea there's nothing you can do as far as special screws..
they will just cause more damage to your dash by trying to get it out, seeing as how most of us have had some stereo stolen, there's really not much you can do but hope for the best.

that said... a friend of mine installed 15 razor blades all around the backside and areas where u would push your hands, within the console.

low and behold... blood everywhere and stereo still there, but haha i wouldnt want that guy to write the license plate and come back and kill you at your house.. man though what a sweet feeling of revenge

Boo! Sorry, that is a bad, bad feeling. On the bright side, at least they left the truck...I had a CR-V in 2000 with 700 miles on it. They took the stereo, all right, but only after they stole my car and drove it across town abandoning it.

It really does make you feel violated. Hope the thieves are located, but be happy in knowing that eventually they will get caught. Guaranteed.

That sucks to hear bud. I've had stuff stolen and I've never been so furious. If you want to look on the bright side though at least it looks like the scumbag knew what he was doing and at least took stuff apart. It could have been worse, they could have punched a hole in the door requiring paint and body work then used a prybar and a side cutters to get the stereo out and hacked up your harness and dash and everything. Looks like you can at least just plug it all back together and be good again once you get the window fixed.

That's exactly what it is, the bad economy. Its like a depression for a large group in this country right now. Out here in Cali they have been stealing cats and even ripping out whole exhaust systems off trucks and suv's.
