as long as you are 09+ non trd offroad 4wd

so if its newer than 2009, not a trd offroad and it has to be 4wd then this mod will work for you

 

TRAC was available for 2007.

I'm pretty sure my 2007 DC 4X4 OR has it according to the 2007 Tacoma options pdf. Is there a definitive way to tell? I bought it used without the window sticker.

I'd love to do the YWM, since I do not have ATRAC.

 

go to a dirt road in 2wd, try to come around a corner sideways, if it lets you and doesnt try to correct you then you have it lol itll also beep and scream at you. or the easy way is to look and see if you have a "VSC" switch...

 

You dont have TRAC with auto lsd. You may have VSC but not TRAC. Toyota did put VSC but TRAC and ATRAC is 09 and newer. The yellow wire mod will not work for you. You have a locker which trumps TRAC anyway

pre 09 vehicles could have VSC option which will beep and try and correct the vehicle in a slide. TRAC is a traction enhancer has more to do with getting moving rather than maintaining control once you are already moving

Would you mind telling me what these lights mean then? I thought one was VSC (VSC OFF) and the other was TRAC ("swervy car")? It sounds like I was wrong judging by your post.

The VSC OFF light comes on when I put it in 4wd.

While still in 4wd, the "swervy car" comes on when I hold the VSC button down for 3+ seconds.

For reference, attached is the 2007 Tacoma options list.

 

I have an Auto LSD light as well. It only turns on in 2wd.

I guess I'm trying to figure out what the swervy car is.

If in 4wd, VSC OFF comes on automatically.

If in 4wd, VSC OFF light is on, and I hold the VSC swervy car button down for 3 seconds, the swervy car light comes on.

Damn truck is more complex than my old 06 STI with NO traction control.

do you have trac in 4hi? if you get into a slick situation will the swervy car symbol flash?

 

I don't recall, and I've yet to get into a real low-traction situation. I hope to this fall .


Keeping in mind the VSC OFF light is on automatically in both 4wd modes, I can turn the swervy car light on or off by pushing the button for 3+ seconds in both 4H AND 4L

This is why I have always thought the swervy car light was TRAC on or off.

So that said, do I even need the yellow wire mod if the swervy car light is indeed TRAC on or off, and I can toggle it on or off in both 4wd modes?

first off, you dont need it since you have a locker... the locker will do more for you than trac ever will

when you engage the locker it turns everything off

if you were to try the yellow wire mod it may not let you turn the locker on

the way the yellow wire mod works is to trick the truck into thinking its still in 4hi.

if you trick your truck the locker wont work since it needs your truck in 4lo before the locker will engage...and your truck will think its in 4hi

 

Sure it would and that's why those without A-TRAC like to perform the yellow wire (4low- trac) mod.

Not sure about '07 system (I had an '05 and then the '10)... but if they didn't change the names or what they do:

VSC uses TRAC to help stabilize the truck.

TRAC in 2WD regulates engine output, and aspplies brakes to reduce tire spin.

TRAC in H4 does not regulate engine output.

AUTO LSD is TRAC in 2WD without engine output regulation, but is also called the TRAC OFF MODE.

To reduce confusion, they should have called TRAC in 4WD 'AUTO LSD' as well!

Great idea. In theory, that sounds like it will do the trick. I think that's getting a bit ahead of ourselves though.

First, I need to determine whether or not I have TRAC. I'm still not sure how to tell definitively other than the 2007 Tacoma options list I posted earlier. I'll continue doing research.

If you guys have a surefire way to tell if I have TRAC, it would be greatly appreciated.

 

well. the most dangerous way to tell is to jack up the one side of the vehicle, put a stand or block of wood under the front lower control arm and the rear axle, making sure both front and rear tires are off the ground on one side, and in 4hi (without pushing any buttons since TRAC is automatically on in 4hi) see if you can move off the jack stands. if not then you have open open with no trac
