Well I'm pretty much done putting money into my truck for a while. It's too new and nice to build into a true trail rig any time soon. I've been looking at some samurais on craigslist. I'd love to have a sammy to go down just about any trail, anywhere. What I'm torn between is which route to go. For it to be truly capable, it's going to need a lift, bigger tires, new axles, and maybe even an engine swap. I know all of that's not totally necessary, you can do some pretty fun stuff in a stock sammy, but that's how I want to set it up. I'm trying to decide if I want to find a stock one for cheap and mod it or find one that has been modded to my liking for a little more. I've never had a trail truck or a big project like this. So I was just wondering what you guys with experience with samurais, or just trail rigs in general, think would be the best plan of action. There are a few stock, a few lightly modded, and a few heavily modded samurais in my area; ranging from around $1000 (stock) to about $5000 (heavily modded).

Pick up a stock one, do everything yourself so you know its right. Head over to pirate4x4 and check the samurai section out.

I vote stock or lightly modded. You'll get more experience with the truck and understand how it all works and is put together. Plus you'll know the weak points and strong points of the vehicle. For any hardcore wheeler I would imagine knowing your way around your own vehicle and being able to do trail repairs with confidence is very important so another reason to go with a stockish truck.

Yeah. I mean I guess I know I should get one and build it myself. I'm just too lazy to, lol. Nah, it's not that I'm lazy, it's just that I don't have a lot of free time on my hands; plus after seeing some of the videos on youtube of what they can do, it makes you want to just buy one that's a beast and hit the trails right then! But it would be dumb to buy one, something go out, or even just a simple fix, and I have no clue what I'm dealing with.

Exactly buy one, decide what size tires you want. Upgrade or get the appropriate axles and then lockers and you will be surprised were leaf springs will go.
