got a quick question for you guys i can't figure it out.

so i wana take some pictures tonight of people playing soccer/football on campus and i guess what I'm trying to figure out is the shutter speed.

i just don't know if there will be enough light to have a fast shutter speed with out the picture turning out crappy.

any suggestions of setting the shutter speed, iso, and maybe the f setting if that really even matters.

Nice crisp photos will be nice, but you can also get blurry ones as well they sometimes turn out nice if it fits the picture. What lens will you be shooting with?

I think you have a good opportunity to experiment, I would try shooting at lowest aperture possible with highest acceptable ISO to get the fastest shutter speed and go from there.

higher ISO and lower F-stop will help keep the photos less blurry. Sometimes a blurry background is nice though IMO so just try panning with the subject and as long as there are lights on where they are playing i think you will be okay

So with the 18-55 try to stay as close to 18 as you can if at all possible to keep that 3.5 aperture. If you don't mind the grain too bad bump it to 1600 ISO and you should do ok. But like they said it is a great opportunity to experiment.

what pope said. you might be able to zoom in and get nice shots but be careful with the high ISO. with the longer exposure it could be more noisy than normal.

Sorry I didn't get to you sooner.

The 18-55 is almost a non-starter unless you're right on top of the action. In almost all sports photography, you want to prefer shutter speed over aperture. And you want to have a speed that's around 640 or above--you're trying to freeze the action. Inevitably, you will have ISO's above 800. Maybe 1200 or so depending on lighting.

Most soccer shooters are working with a 70-200 as their short lens and possibly a 300 or 400 as their main lens. Tight crops are the rule. So that 18 is just a field full of players--sorry.

If you're doing portraits, then the 18-55 will work for you (assuming you have close up access).

    Good luck!

ya i know exactly what you mean its just kinda hard getting close enough to get a good shot, and the few that i did get were looking a little random like i was a 5 year old with a point and shoot haha, but ill have a lot more chances to go back and try again till i can figure something out before it gets too cold to be outside
