Taking 2001 Toyota Tacoma in For Frame Inspection

Hello All,

I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma that has only 33 thousand miles on it.

It has spent its whole life in Philadelphia. PA - parked most of the time in front of my South Philadelphia row home.

I've used it mostly to go to the store and I have my Ham Radio gear in it.

Heck, it's never been on highways much and I don't think it has seen a lot of road salt.

I got a recall notice from Toyota saying that I had to take it to a Toyota dealer for a frame inspection - since many of the 2001 Tacomas have had trouble with excessive rust.

My question is this: What is the likelihood that a Tacoma like this - 33K miles, rarely driven on highways, being kept in Philadelphia - all of that, what is the likelihood that its frame has major rust problems?

When I get under it - I see some surface rust which is normal...but it does not look like tons of rust.

Anyone else from this area have to take a 2001 Tacoma in for this inspection?

They will inspect the frame. If it's ok they should set you up with an appointment to spray the frame for protection. Then you will come back every year for a inspection. If it's no good they will replace the frame. No cost to you.

I am just wondering if this Tacoma frame rot thing happens to vehicles that have been drive a lot on salty highways.

I also am worried that there if the frame does need to be replaced that the dealer will finds lots more that is not covered,,have heard horror stories like that.

Oh well, wait and see.

Well ok i see where your coming from.
That can be a good thing.

What we do is like exhaust, shocks, stuff like that need replacement we sometimes don't charge anything or a bare min. to swap because things are almost all apart. We do things like t/belts and water pumps for 50% of the time cause it's so easy to do . At least that's what the boys at my place do. So it can be a good thing.

Well up here we're in salt all the time in winter so frames take a beating. We have trucks split in half because of it.
Parking in tall grass is a big no no too.
Don't get to concerned until you need to.
