Experience w/ AFE Pro Dry?

Are the AFE air filters all they are cracked up to be???
i am needing to get rid of my stock filter and haven't had the best of luck with K&N and other aftermarket filters

i like how AFE is a oil free filter. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how good the AFE Pro Dry is but as soon as my TRD filter gets dirty,I'm switching to the AFE Pro Dry.

 

I have an AFE pro-dry.

I honestly don't think it allows as much air through it as the K&N does.
I had better mpg results with a K&N, my 96 tacoma, and the deckplate mod than I did with this 07 tacoma and the AFE, removed 2nd filter.

I just like it because I can clean it. I was hoping for some MPG benefits, but I haven't seen any. Although I haven't cleaned the AFE yet...I'm under the assumption I don't have to buy a cleaning kit for it.

 

Not to be stupid, but what would be the benefits of the stock setup less 2nd filter with the AFE pro-dry. Does it add horses? Trottle response?

I had a K&N CAI on my dakota, and was not impressed. Not a fan of the oiled filters!!! The trottle body area over time got caked w/ crud. It did add more throttle response though, but fuel economy got worse.

 

I bought my AFE Pro Dry here through a Group Buy for $50 shipped and what sold me was I could clean and reuse it vs. the throw away paper ones. Plus it has a lifetime warranty against defect. I kept my factory one to throw back in there when I do get around to cleaning it.

I've been totally satisified with my purchase. FWIW I did not remove my secondary.

 

Depends on who you ask... when I bought the AFE, I thought it would give me slightly better gas mileage & better throttle response. Throttle response, yes. Gas mileage, no. The biggest benefit is not having to buy another air filter for as long as you own the truck (no cleaning kit to buy).

Oiled filters are fine as long as you keep them cleaned and don't over-oil them. I owned K&N drop-ins for years without any problems. I got increased MPG & better throttle response also. I liked not having to buy another air filter.

As for CAI's - I had one of those in my Dodge Ram. The engine was loud as hell, we lost shitloads of torque (for towing), and coupled with an exhaust system, we lost gas mileage. I ended up yanking the thing off. I got better MPG with the exhaust system and stock air setup.

I think CAI's are more for 'racing' (and not your casual user)

 

My AFE drop in experience was the same, I bought it for the MPG..didn't get any benefits so I went to the AFE CAI PRo Guard, great setup Mpg might have dropped a little, but its about the same time as winter gas so hard to tell..I actually thought my towing gas MPG went up though as I have more torque in the 4th gear 2500 rpm range. Overall the intake rocks at WOT big time over the stock intake and power. Passing gear is there now and I'm not afraid of the V8s showing me their arses, as I can hang right in there and not let them squeeze me out or smoke my arse off the line, that in itself is worth the AFE CAI in itself.

I recently did the aFe dropin/2nd filter removal. Scored from autoanything.com for 31 & change after some discount thing I had & free shipping event they did. Definitely feels a little better. I have the 4 cyl. MPG no noticeable change, still pulling about 20 mpg pushin around 285/60/18s driving semi-politely. Yeah, had K&Ns with no problems for years & years. Mostly went with this one because it was half the cost of the K&N (see above factors) & cleaning not requiring a cleaning kit. Is what it is...........

I have the aFe 4.0L ProDry S, to be honest I can't tell any difference from stock. I have swapped it out/in when going for service and it really doesn't seem to make a difference in performance. I like being able to clean it instead of replacing, that's really why I got it.
