IMHO, if my old truck was running ok I would start stocking the money back and wait till I had more cash available. There are bigger things that could use money/attention right now.

What are the upsides of the truck compared to the 4Runner? Which will cost less in the long run?

If that is the route that gives you the best assurance you can get to work and have a trail rig; then decide how much truck you can afford while still being able to put money into the trail rig. It is kinda pointless to get a big diesel if you can't afford to put any money into a trail rig. A good half ton will get the job done when needed and still leave you some room to build the rig out.

In the end it always comes down to a compromise.

Some talk about building the Taco, or building a different trail rig. This of course all depends on what your long term goals are for your rig. With me, I thought about building up the taco as my dedicated trail rig, and get a tow rig. I wanted SAS, lockers, big tires, and low gears. To do this on the Taco, it would have cost be around the $15K mark. I found a rig build to exactly what I wanted, minus a few details, for a lot less. I bought a dedicated trail rig based off of that. It would be a lot cheaper for me to buy a rig, rather than build what I had. Sure, I could have done it, but time and money are never on my side.

And now, I am on the fence about trying to bring my Taco back closer to stock. I think what I'll do is make it more of an expedition truck, and the 84 as my hardcore offroader. So, I'll build the Taco so if I wanna take it somewhere and do more of a trail ride, instead of climbing rocks, then I have that.

I still may end up buying a tow rig, and keeping both wheeler trucks.

I like taking the Taco out, and showing off what it can do. The last time I took it to Bridgeport, I was going up one trail. A bunch of jeep guys pulled up and were asking what I had, and said that I would never make it up. I made it up that trail with ease. They turned to go up, took a look at it, and backed out. They saw me later, and just looked the other direction.

Whatever you decide on doing. Wheel it, don't baby it. These trucks can take a beating. With a rear locker, some decent tires, and good armor; these trucks can go about anywhere. If it breaks, fix it with better parts, and move on.
