Lets see your food Plot (pics)

Well the food plot bug has hit me thanks to a couple of 12 year old hunting buddies.

This is my first venture at this and it's been fun so far. Throughout the past year I bought a tractor, mule, and a 10' disc. And not necessarily to put in food plots. Well since I had the tools, I thought I would give it a shot. QDMA forums and a few others have been my resources, but I told Will last night I'd get him up some pics. Here you all go. 3 different spots.

no pics of the lime truck, but after he came in, I disced again. I'm not using any other chemicals this year since this was a last minute decision to do some plots.
....a light rain, and more on the way, so ready to seed and then roll it in with roller on September 6th. It lightly rained good all day the next few days.

well the youth hunt is this weekend and i'm taking both of them in seperate stands, so we'll see what kind of memories we can make. I'll get a current picture up of what they look like now. We have had some good soaker rains in the last week, so I'm sure their looking good.



Ok everybody, let's see all of those food plots out there.......with tree stand locations too in case I want to hunt over one of them.

 

I would suggest getting soil samples of your field tested at the local ag extension office. That will tell you exactly what nutrients and fertilization your soil needs. Since you are going into winter I would also ask about them what preparation steps are typical for your area such as herbicide and fertilization.

Establish a relationship with your local farm supply store(s). The people there will be an incredible resource as you go through the growing season about pesticides and herbicides, etc. Arrange to pay cash on delivery and don't be afraid to ask for a COD discount. They probably have to offer credit to the local commercial farmers for the growing season to get their business and may offer 5% or more for COD.

Join the local farmers co-op or organix growers organization, etc. They will have a place for your crop to go. Otherwise you can can a lot of stuff.

Last thing is:

The best fertilizer is the farmer's footsteps.

If your garden is going to be succesful you are going to have to put in the necessary man hours.

Thanks Jim. Oh yea, well aware of all of this. I work with a fella that is one of my best resources. I'm not going to try and do it all in one year. And I may decide to stay as organic as I can. Not sure yet. Getting my 12 year old son on the 60 horse tractor doing some discing was the best sight I've ever seen and he is laying claim to all the crops coming up. Thanks again for the great advice....post up some pics of yours sometime. I'd love to see them.

Nice plots brother!! I'll get pics of mine up soon. Mine are small.....3 of them....about 10 ft by 10 ft....my property is only 5 acres.......4 wooded.

 

i forgot it was you that had the twins. and 12, woooo, you got some crazy years ahead of you haha! (i got a twin sister). and thats a cool plot man. i did one back in high school. just a mixture of a bunch of stuff that i planted to hunt over/a horticulture project. . . .and most importantly MASSEY FERGUSON! great buy

I used to grow tomatoes, potatoes and watermelons on a commercial basis years ago before NAFTA and the Adkins diet.

We would grow tomatoes on a plot next to the river that we harvested by June, quickly pull the plastic and stakes and follow it with corn we sold to a dairy for feed in September and October. The corn would use up all the excess fertilizer and would grow well even in the summer rains. When we harvested it some of the corn inadvertently fell to the ground and, incidently, drew a large number of dove which we would, of course, shoot.

That worked real well until Fish and Game showed up at a dove hunt one November afternoon and started writing citations for shooting over a baited field until they got to the local sheriff who was an invited guest at the hunt.

In the end the only citation was to the guy who put everything together and he later plead to a small misdemeanor.

I'm doing mine on a property I have permission to hunt/leased and is also in the CRP program.

 

we are serving up blacken oats this year with a side of charcoal. Fires got the top of the biggest hill on our families land in Leon county. everything to the right of the picture is gone and everything behind me is gone. we are about half way down the hill. The house is about 350 yards down the road. The fire jump over the fence before the it got to the barn.
