wow... You live in fucking Texas. When does the sun rise there? Because it rises sometime after I get to work in the morning and sets damn near the time I get home during the winter. So why the fuck would I want to freeze my ass off in -3F weather fumbling around with a metal tire gauge in the dark before leaving for work? Toyota put a system in to monitor things and did half assed for more money. What's wrong with replacing that system with a cheaper, more functional one? (especially when such systems are going to be required on vehicles?)

Oh, and maybe I want a "idiot" light to tell my wife there's something wrong when she's out by herself with 3 kids and doesn't have the time, patience or presence of mind to check all five tires by herself. Jackass.

I suppose you get the jack handle and lower your spare tire every couple of days to check it's pressure too right? Since you're not so fucking lazy as to skip it.

I *bought* 4 sensors and had them installed on new steel rims for snow tires. *Then* I found out I had to get the dealer to reprogram (I thought - what idiot would design a system where you have to reprogram up the sensors. Then I *paid* the dealer $90 for 10 minutes of work (fixed charge 1 hour) to reprogram the control unit. *Then* they told me that when I put the mags back on, I'd have to have it reprogrammed, because THE FUCKING IDIOTS ONLY HAVE MEMORY FOR 5 SENSORS (rather than 10 for 2 full sets of tires).

At least I'm pretty sure thats what they said, because I basically stroked out when they told me this.

So when the snow melts & I reinstall the mags, if that light comes on, the control unit comes out.

This is the only thing that bothers me about the truck.

And it bothers me a lot. What moron could have conceived of such a thing?

PS I am told TPMS is required for new vehicles sold in the US, but that no excuse for a bad design.

As long as you park your truck in the vicinity of the -4- tires with sensors (snows mounted or stacked in garage/shed), then the truck will get the signal from them and not flash the idiot light.

After I sold my stock wheels, I think it took about 2-3 days, maybe it goes by ignition cycles (25?), but it's not instant.

    FYI.

from what i noticed, it was w/i a certain radius of the sensors.....as soon as i left the area of my sensors on the old wheels, my light would come on....regardless of being off or starting the truck

I had mine on one side of my 3 car garage and would park my truck on the other side, or outside within 50 feet. The light never came on, even when I went away for the weekend. I sold the stock wheels/tires, and about 3 days later, the light blinked and stayed on until I unplugged the ECU.

    YMMV.

I just bought a new sensor for my truck for about $73 from Toyotapartsales.com. Yeah, the dealer quoted something like $125.

Anyway, I was wondering about reprogramming. Kauffman Tire installed the new sensor/Rim/Tire and the light is still on. They SAID they could do it, but so far I am calling their bluff. I'll try one more time, and then I guess it's off to the dealership.... $40 to be done with the mess I have been through with my tires is a bargain at this point.

After you unplug the TPMS does the light take a while to go off or something? I unpluged it and my light is still on. Did i do something wrong? How do I get my light to go off?:( Anyone???

You may be in trouble come time for your inspection. I believe the TPMS is tied into the computer system, so even though your light is not "ON" the computer will register the error. You won't be able to pass inspection until the computer is reset to eliminate the error. If I'm wrong and you've already passed inspection please let me know! Thanks.

The sensors may or may not fit the new rim and the required pressure for the new tires may or may not be the same as the stock tires...SO at the least you'll have to reset it in the truck- and you may have to buy different sensors...

Does the system actually have to be functional if you were in for some other sevicing or does the tech turn a blind eye as long as the light is out?

Is it still easy to dissable the TPMS in 08 and 09 models?
