Hello there folks...hope everyone is doing well. Can you shed some light on this problem?

After accelerating, I hear a "rattling" sound- seems to come from below the taco (nothing from the engine area.) I NEVER hear it when stepping on the gas pedal....ONLY when I take the pressure off the pedal and coast...

Based on what I've read, I think it's related to the exhaust:confused:...but I wanted to check with you guys to see what (specifically) it might be before I head out to the mechanic.

NOTE: ...no mods done to exhaust, engine, etc....everything still stock:(

I appreciate any help, in advance! Thanks! -J

Sounds like me, but the opposite. I only hear the rattle when on the gas, not when coasting. I've heard before that it may be heat shield related, just have to get under there some time and check it out.

ive had my front driveshaft come unbolted and it rattled and eventaully started making really loud banging noises. so while you are under the truck id just check both driveshafts. but it sounds like what countryboy is talking about..

    Thanks very much everyone....

Vacountryboy....Yeah, it is a "metal on metal" rattle. It sounds like two spoons clanging together rapidly. I also forgot to mention that it is much worse on cold mornings (even after the required warming up period)........but sometimes, at the end of the day after at least 20 or 30 miles- I don't hear a thing.

Thanks REX and glamis, as well...at least I am in the ballpark now.

im in this same boat i have this exact rattle when i let off the gas and coast. mine has a bit of a squeak to it. my exhaust is not stock and it has 2 slip joint to connect the smaller stock pipe to the bigger .dia of the aftermarket exhaust. i believe my rattle may either be from that or i was also advised to check the main center bearing that hold up the drive shaft..mine seems fine. its so strange because just as you described sometimes i dont even hear it..but most of the time i do hear it though. its so annoying! it makes me feel like my truck is a noisy piece of crap. if anyone can get to the bottom of this that would be great. im going to get my exhaust welded this week so well see if that fixes it

My issue happened right around 1900rpm almost every time. I heard the metal rattle sound but soon as it was above or below that RPM I didn't hear it. So I had someone help me by getting to that RPM when in out of gear to find out my second O2 sensor's nuts were gone. Drove me crazy at stop lights sounding like a POS truck. But two nuts fixed the problem quick. Does it do it if you are in park rev'ing? If so get someone to rev it while looking to see where it's coming from.

Stout890- sorry to hear about that...but glad I'm not the only one who hears this annoying sound. I was starting to think it was in my head.

turtletaco- yeah, it has made the noise when in park while revving. So your O2 sensor nuts were missing? Yikes...I have to get it smogged in a few days- hope that doesn't affect the test result. I don't know...

Since it doesn't make this noise alllllll the time, I'm a little hesistant to take it to my mechanic and sit there revving (or driving around the block)....because we all know that as soon as you want to show someone a problem- it disappears!

Well, the good news is, this is the ONLY problem I've ever had with this truck! Which is saying quite a bit compared to friends who have owned Chevys, Dodge, etc. (those are good, but Toys are great!)

I will update everyone as I investigate more....please do the same if you all find anything out! Thanks!

I'm pretty convinced it's the slip joint in my exhaust. One day I'll get around to getting it tack welded

Tacojoecoma you ever figure this one out? My rattle went away for a while and has now come back!! I hate this rattle. Still looking to get the exhaust slip joint fixed up eith with a tack weld or cut a releif slit so that the worm clamp can grip the two pipes beter

Had the same thing. It was coming from my muffler. Muffler replaced and no more rattle. Have someone rev it while you listen for the sound....

I get this annoying rattle at about 1800RPMs. Not heat shield unfortunately. Interested if you find it.

People who get a rattle while accelerating or at a certain rpm most likely have a bad cat that is going to pieces on the inside.

My rattle is when I let off the gas while coasting over 15mph so to have someone rev it while I listen won't do much for me. I need to mount a gopro under the frame and review the video lol but I don't have a gopro. Maybe I can have someone drive it while I fallow in another car and listen to try and pinpoint it. But I think it's the exhaust piping

No! I never figured it out....except to say that I'm 100% positive it is Cat related....based on everyone's post replies here.

I can't believe I've still let it go this long.....

In the past month or so I haven't heard it, actually. But I know the problem is still there. :( It's annoying, huh?

Start with checking the heat shields on and around your exhaust. Try and see if they'll pull away at all. I've had a problem with heat shields on a Tundra. The rivets that held em' together rusted off, so I just bolted em' back together. Grade 8 did the trick.
