OK, I am new to Tacomas and new to this forum so I apologize for my ignornace or stupid questions in advance.

I recently bought a 2006 TRD Sport Quad Cab and the stock wheels on it are kind of a mess, while I am going to attempt to refinish them myself I am also looking to possibly replace them.

I would like to go with a set of procomp steel wheels, I am a big fan of the series 52 and 98 wheels, however I do a lot of highway driving and was wondering if I would compromise any ride comfort or mpg in going with a steel wheel?

    Any info is apprreciated, thanks.

if you are riding directly on the rims, ya, i could imagine that your ride comfort would be compromised :D

seriously though.... its the brand/size/type of tire and the weight of the rim/tire combo that will affect gas mileage and ride comfort, not just what material the rim is made out of.

Figured as much, coming from a BMW I can appreciate the difference in a quality tire compared to a lesser one. Just looking for a half decent looking repalcement for my stock wheels and am looking to go with a black finished wheel.

Also anyone know where I can find the weight of Procomp's wheels, searched extensively and can't find anything.

Heard back from Procomp and the 17x8 Series 98s are 34 lbs. each, from research on here it seems the stock 17x8 wheels are about 29 lbs.

Anyone know how much of a difference 5-6 lbs. a wheel may have on my ride quality/mpg? If at all.

Again sorry if these are stupid questions, I am new to the whole truck game.

at 5 pounds, you wont even notice a difference in mpg.

i went from a stock tire to a 33" tire and 65 pounds total tire/rim weight to 96 pounds total tire/rim weight and my mpg only went down 2-3 mpg.

dont worry about it... put on the rims and tires that you want to :)

Thanks for all the info, one more dumb question, backspace the wheel I want comes in 2.5, 3.75, and 4.5, I understand it is basically offset, but what would you recommend.

    on a 17x8 rim, you want a 4.5 backspace.

OK so I just called 4 Wheel Parts as I had some questions about a set of Procomp Series 52 17x8 inch steel wheels for my 2006 TRD Sport, he said these wheels wouldn't fit my truck as they would rub on the brake calipers, is this a bunch of crap as after researching I have seen people with these wheels on their trucks?

Man sorry to disappoint you, but those guys at 4 Wheel Parts are a bunch of tools. Find a set of steel wheels some where else.

Figured as much since the guy tried to then sell me a more expensive set of alloy wheels.

So will a set of 17x8 steel wheels with a 4.5 backspace fit my truck?

Wheelers off road sells a set of 16s. More sidewall. Suppose to be a better over all ride with more side wall. And the 4.5 backspaceing will be good.

Thanks, want to stick with a 17 inch wheel though, I don't want to have to get new tires too just yet.

feel free to PM me about steel wheel fitment... i been dealing with steels since 2004... im currently bed ridden due to a recent kidney failure so i don't surf the forums as much as i usually do, so PM is best...

as i pass through here now, i will say that the 98s are dimple die holes and the placement of the holes are such that the inner bend of the holes hit the brake vein on the tacoma calipers...

as for the 52, 4WP tends to do a blanket answer that they will not clear your brakes but that is more based on the circumferance of the wheel, not the face...

i ran the 52s for a few years and they are strong as hell... with your bigger motor, you won't notice a lot of impact on your power...

Thanks for all the info, I ended getting a set of Pro Comp 7089s.

EDIT: Apparently all Pro Comp alloy wheels are on back order forever, went with my original selection of Pro Comp Series 52 steelies, 17x8 with a 4.5 backspace.
