Whats this noise??

Ok so lately i have noticed a sqeaking noise from the rear when i accelerate on the gas and when i let off it quits...Starting to get very annoying i must say lol...Any info would be great..

 

could be the carrier bearing going bad?? the squeak i have in the rear is usually my leafs... but its only there when i go over uneven pavement

 

Yea i get that squeaking from my leafs to, but this just happens when i accelerate on the gas

 

check the bolts on your drive shaft and the bearings if they are worn. check for any loose bolts near that area as well.

 

U joint, try shaking the axle up down left and right at each u joint to see if there is any play. There should be none. If there is, then replace. You can also shoot some grease into them to see if squeaking goes away.

 

also check the exaust?? The cats maybe. Just throwing all the areas of trouble. U bolts are good too ^^^

probably just the leafs, same issue here when you hit the gas it rocks weight flexes leafs and squeaks

 

99% sure it's the u joints on your shaft. Happened in one of my old trucks

 

So how do i go about fixing this if it was the U joints??? sorry im not good at workin on vehicles lol

 

U joints are fairly easy. Pair of needle nose pliers and some wrenches oughta do the trick. Just be sure to assemble the shaft the same way as you dis assemble it, meaning match mark it.

The u joints have clips in the outer part of the yoke to hold them in. Use needle nose pliers to squeeze them and pull em the clips out. Next press the u joint out side to side. If you can't do this by hand then you will have to get a large C clamp and two sockets, ome small to push the u joint and one large so that the u joit can slip inside of it. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, take it to a transmission shop to have them replace it. I had a Tundra with a bad u joint that I couldn't get the u joint out of and the shop I took it to had to send it out cuz their press couldn't do the job. Then I had an old Lincoln Towncar that I did u joints and just pressed them by hand. So take your time and pay attention to detail. You can also get the haynes or chilton dummie book and it'll walk you through the steps with perty pics. That's what I do. Good luck

If you are not so mechanically inclined... i'd take it to a shop. However, this is a very easy job. Here is what you will need in order to do it quickly:

Pliers
Torch
Hammer and Wooden mallet
Necessary wrenches
Grease gun

1. Check which U-Joints are bad. Note: Get Japanese made U-Joints.

2. Take out the whole assembly.

3. Set it somewhere and take out the clips from the U-Joints that need replacing

4. Heat up the U-Joint a bit and with some type of small hard tubing, hammer the U-Joint to one side. Take out the end that comes out and repeat with another side. Then the U-Joint should come out. Take out the next 2 tips with the same heat/hammer technique.

5. From now on be careful with you new U-Joint. Do not drop them or open them constantly. They have small pins inside that you need to not damage.

6. Take out caps from 2 ends and with a wooden mallet, put the U-Joint inside and hammer the tips into the drive shaft flange. You should have 2 tips secured. Now repeat with the next 2.

7. Put all clips in.

8. Grease them will a bit of grease comes out.

9. Reassemble assembly in the same way it was at the beginning.

Note: Pressing the U-Joints with a small press will be really hard, hence why the torch and hammer method. You would need a decent press for this, which most of us will not have at home.

I've changed plenty of these on Tacoma's and so far so good. It real easy and fast once you get it down.

I'm not a mechanic by trade, so take this for what it's worth.

 

Well me and my dad are doing this sometime in the middle of next week...So whats the best brand of U joints to get and what store has the best price??

 

Or is it best to get the part from a dealership

Geez i gotta get new U joints, oil change, fix my overhead temp gauge, then to top it off my driver front tire has a small leak in it..Next week should be busy fixing these things lol..Also gonna fix them damn squeaky leafs..Sorry just had to rant

If it's not your u-joints, I'd definitely look at the carrier bearing... Mine went out before on my '01... caused a vibration upon acceleration and a low drone sound... Good luck!
