Zerk grease quantity..new truck

Brand new 2011, (2.7l, base, auto, 4x4) 1 month old. After reading all the zerk grease threads and a lot of you finding they are near dry from the factory, I decided to go ahead and put in some Mobile 1 syn grease on all 5 zerks. I used over ½ of tube of grease and only greased until I head the pop and saw a little factory grease coming out. Don’t want to over-do anything with a brand new truck. 2 questions:


1 If you have greased all 5 zerks on a new 4x4, how much grease did you use?
2 Should I completely purge the factory grease with the Mobile1, or is it OK to have them mix?


Mobile 1 is a grade 2 and suppose to be fine for all five zerks. Oh hell, I guess that's 3 questions.

 

This has been pretty common at least in the 3 Tacoma's I have worked on. I personally do not purge all of the grease. I push enough out to get the water and real nastyness out. All that really matters is that you have a good helping of good fresh grease in there....

It's fine, now that they are filled, just give them a couple squirts every oil change and you should be good to go for a long time....

 

Where are these 5 grease fitting at? I know it probably says somewhere in the manual but if someone could indulge me I would appreciate it.

1 fitting on each u-joint. Crawl under and look and you will find them. quantity will vary based on truck drive-line configuration....

i have a double cab long box and i can only find 3, one on each u joint

 

Three on rear shaft two on front shaft. The two on the front shaft are hard to see and even harder to get the grease gun to them.

 

so your saying theres more than one zerk per u-joint? maybe mine have been replaced before....hmmmm

 

You shouldn't have them on your 2 wheel drive.
To clarify, your joints do not need to be greased.

All 5 of mine required 5-10 pumps at my first change. I would say that they were pretty dry from factory.

 

I put maybe 10 strokes in my 2007 the first time I lubed it. It had 15K miles at the time.

Good practice is to not mix grease types. So yeah, purge the old stuff out just on principle. But then, I purge all the old grease from my u-joints when I lube since I'm rarely positive I'm using exactly the same grease and... why not?

I don't believe using something special (like synthetic grease) will do anything for a u-joint. I say that because I've never had a problem with any u-joint I've kept lubed, even using whatever crap grease it is that comes bundled with the grease gun. That's never. Ever. Just lube it regularly and you'll be fine.

 

Thanks, gives me reassurance that I did not over do it on a new truck. Guess these are not shipped from the factory with much grease in them. I guess I'll hit them ever other oil change and be ok.

 

I was pumping and pumping (the grease gun that is) and was wondering where the hell all the grease was going? They are pretty dry from the factory.

 

Would no grease cause a squeaking noise ??? (In the front passenger side)

I was wondering because I have this really annoying squeaking sound between 50km/h and 60 km/h.
