My job requires me to go long distances, so all my miles are at 75 mph on highways. Not much stopping/starting...just straight down the highway. I can do 5000 miles in a very short time (2months). I do use synthetic oil.
How often do I really need to change my oil?
    '03 tac. 4 cyl. manual
    Thanks!

It's an 89 Toyota Pickup. I got some stuff done to it.. FJ axles going under it soon.
I did every 3,000 on my old 2wd..but I did 3,000 miles in about 1 month..
but I also beat the piss out of that motor..so yeah.

    18 dollar oil changes ftw.

My new truck haven't drove it enough yet for an oil change..getting there. I'll probably do ever 3k or maybe 3500..

    Thanks for your responses...
I guess my real question is how different driving habits effect engine wear, or in this case, oil usage. If I am only doing highways for long distances, what differences can I expect versus normal stop and go driving.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

highway miles are the easiest on every component of the truck. If I were you I would let it go 7k miles then send an oil sample to blackstone. they will tell you how you're doing and if you can go even further. Im betting you could safely do 10k on a synthetic oil change if blackstone says it's ok. Just change that OEM (not FRAM) filter every 5k or so.

I'm not sure if this is helpful in any way, but I do 5k intervals with Mobil 1.
    2 Reasons:

    1) Its easier for me remember
    2) I don't drive a lot of miles per year (less than 7,500), and most of my trips are short 2-4 milers on city streets. I figure with the amount of start/stop/go events I shouldn't push it out too long.

I'm sure I'm pissing away money on overkill oil, but hell I piss away much more money on much more stupid things.

I run mobil 1 or Castrol syn depending on whats on sale... with either a mobil 1/k&n filter or toyota filter.

I change mine every 4-5k depending on how dirty the oil gets. I offroad pretty often and the sugar-sand dust is pretty bad in FL...

Using real oil, always under 5,000 miles (the recommended) between changes... closer to 3,000 (today's service is at 3,800 miles since my last oil change). Synthetic is supposed to last longer, as it is also costlier.

Changing your oil is the CHEAPEST way to keep your engine running trouble-free.

I like 5k. It equates to an oil change every season for me. I use synthetic and an M-209 filter.

I wouldn't be afraid to run the oil 10,000 miles. But, the only real way is an oil analysis.

Do a ten thousand mile oil run, take a sample, and send it in. The lab will tell you if the oil can go longer or should have been changed sooner.

Anything under 5K you're just wasting your money.
