Your exact words are what prove (to me) that there never was, and never will be an intervening God. It's called "own free will"... There might be some higher "being", but if there is, he/she never played a part in creating what we call religion.

People always need a "reason" as to why things happen. It's too difficult to make it through life sometimes with the bad things that happen without having some kind of explanation behind it. Hence, religion was borne. Likewise, many people can't accept the fact that when you die, you go nowhere, that's it, game over no matter how you lived your life. They need a better place to go to.

That is my take. But I even find myself at times wishing, praying for things to get better when they seem at their worst. Human nature is too weak in general to not have a belief to pray to for intervention or explanation.

i think that the "feeling" of god that some people claim to have, is the energies of the universe, but they dont have a way of knowing that, and pass it off as god because they already believe in him and it simply makes their belief stronger.

This is why to some degree, I believe more in the Buddist religion than anything. Because it's preaches that this IS heaven, you live it everyday, and it's all what you make it. We're derived from the earth which is a living thing, and when we die we'll go back to it, and have respect for all other living things. It's a lot more complicated than that, but in a nutshell that's what it preaches.

agree, there's no right or wrong answer, because there's not enough tangible proof on either side of the argument.

And nobody ever relents or admits defeat. :D

I suppose if you have to stand firm on something, faith is a good place to start.

but why not reincarnation? as for the "where we go" question. i think its more logical than heaven or hell. if all there are, are souls incoming to both, wouldnt it get rather full? and then new souls are created for babies? so why not life cycles of different living things?

i think that religion was created to control the minds of people. when people grow up under a religion, they become "programmed" to think a certain way. the more people think the same way, the less people think for themselves. if u dont use ur brain, u lose it. i realized that after being unable to use my brain through boot camp. after 3 months of that, i tried to think again, and it was hard. too many people now days just care about getting drunk and fucking. hey, thats all in good fun, but u need to make urself a little more useful in ur life. so many simple people....

You must have faith in something, it's what give you the will power to make it through everyday. For some, having faith in themselves just isn't enough. This is why I don't have time for church. God and Jesus aren't going to come down here and work 12 hour days when I need the OT. I have to do it.

But your absolutely right, for that reason Religion and Politics are generally bad topics of conversation at the dinner table, when they shouldn't be.

The biggest thing that drives someone like myself absolutely mad about religion is the current corruption. "Hand over your paycheck, and you'll go to heaven"... But again, that's a problem with the church, not the religion. So I choose to stay at home, until the wife drags me along :D on occasion.

I was raised catholic, and I'm confirmed. But as soon as I was old enough to make my own decisions, I realized just how ridiculous religion is.

9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10 That is why for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

    church of baseball

If a player prays for a home run, you think the Baseball Gods give him that bomb? Or do they give him a pitch that he can hit? If he prayed for strikeout, do the Gods give him a strikeout, or do they give him the opportunity to get that big K? If someone prayed for the team to win a game, do you think the Gods zaps them with Win, or do they give them opportunities to score runs?

For those of you who follow the church of baseball, the moral of the story is:
You've got to work for everything that you get, come to the yard every day and use the opportunities you are given and don't let them pass you by. And if by any chance you miss that opportunity? Remember, The Gods have always planned for another game tomorrow

    None yet.
Does God have a plan? If so, what's the point in praying? Is He going to say, "Yeah that other thing was a stupid idea. I'll do that instead."
