tips on better mpgs on 2.7?

i have a 2000 prerunner with 2.7 with 34 inch tires on it. i just recently got the truck and this is my first full tank so far im almost at half and i have just a little over 100 miles on the tank. looks like im going to get a little over 200 to the tank which sucks for mpg. Aside from the tires what else will help? and i drive the truck easy dont let it go over 2,000 it is an automatic.. will plugs and wires and a synthetic oil change help? i need it to get atleast 16.

 

Yeah the 34s sure as hell aren't helping. Plus run a full tank first before you make your calculations. If you calculate off the first 1/2, you'll always get suck mileage. Gotta run through the full tank.

 

That seems like there's something wrong.
I've got 35x12.50 KM2's, 6" of lift, and armor and my 2.7L w/ 5speed gets consistently 18.5-20.5mpg on each tank.

What gears do you have in it? If its not regeared, you can find out with this info:

Also if you arent regeared, your odometer is off and you're probably traveling farther than it reads, and therefore getting better mpgs than you're calculating

 

Just drive downhill. Just kidding. I'm guessing it's the tires and rear gear combo. If you like the tire size you could do advanced search in 1st gen builds for prerunners and find out what rear gears they are using. I'm getting 20 to 22 mixed mpgs with my 2.7 5 speed 4x4 with 3" lift on 30.47" stock 245/75/16 and will be going to 31.65" 265/75/16. And like Eric said if not regeared your speedo is off. With 34" tires 50 mph = 55.8 mph 100 miles on odo is 111.6 real miles. Still not great mps but like Brian said 1/2 tank might not be 1/2 tank some gages drop faster on the first 1/2 and some on the second 1/2. Eric you got stock gears on yours?

 

does anyone know what gears come in the rear end of a 2000 Prerunner? It hasnt been regeared i know that... How much will that actually help in mpgs? so far i have 120 on the tank and its just a hair over half full so i guess i have really went like 132 considerin the tires have the odometer off

 

Google fuelly and use that website, they do need you to fill up though, not partial fillls buts it makes it so easy to track your mpg

 

Could just be your odometer is way off because of the bigger tires.

 

so it reads b07a so i guess that is 4.30? What would be a good gear ratio?

 

i filled my truck all the way up. im out 120 miles on the odometer so i guess thats like 130 because of tires and i have a little over a half tank so i guess i can assume i will get 250 or better which is like 15 miles to the gallon isnt as bad as i thought

 

Thats what mine currently has with the 35's. I'll be going to 4.88's as soon as I have enough mod money to do so.
That said, 4.30 isnt too bad for a stock gearing, but you'd probably benefit going to 4.56 or maybe 4.88's with your 34's.
The engine will turn higher rpm on the freeway, but it will also be more in its powerband so it wont be lugging and struggling so much when trying to climb up to speed or go up hills. Around town you should pick up MPG with the gearing for sure since its easier to accelerate with the lower gear ratios.

 

Other things to do to help mpgs would be running synthetic oils, using a higher flowing/less restrictive air filter like a K&N, AFe, TRD, etc. Also a freer flowing exhaust could help.
Actually, tracking your driving habits and driving style with a Scangauge2 or Ultrgauge, and adjusting as necessary can help too. Plus until you regear, you can calibrate the gauge for the larger tires and it will give you accurate speed and MPG readings.
Mine has the TRD air filter, and a Flowmaster exhaust on it and I run synthetics, and keep track of my mpg's with my scangauge.

 

ya i have a kn filter and a magnaflow exhaust and i just got the truck so i dont know what type of oil is in it but i have a case of Amsoil 5-30 for my next schedule oil change..; how much are scangage?

 

lol and its not my driving habits there good i dont ever let it go over 2000 rpm and i try to avoid stops but most of my driving is short like less that 5 miles to work and then back home

 

Actually if the tire sites are right your stock tires were 225/70/15 so 34s are more like 25% off or 120 would really be 150.

I'd use gps or mileage markers to find out how far the odometer really is off, the gears may not be the same either.

But a 5 mile commute will always suck mpg.

 

Well if you never go over 2000rpm, and you're geared too tall... you're probably lugging the shit out of it and burning excess gas that way. I rev out to around 3000 for every shift, and you see what my mpgs were. Maybe try driving it a little more like a little rev-happy 4 cylinder than a big torquey v8.
My commute is 6 miles btw, so the better mpgs I'm getting isnt from having a longer commute either.

 

ya i will give that a try... i was always under the assumption if you drive it like i do that it would help... anyways like worthywad says i think my odo is closer to 25 percent off cause of the tires so i am going to borrow a gps to see whats up

well is yours a 4x4? cause they come with different size tires stock.?
