    I need help on choosing the correct rear shocks. I do not have a lift on my truck and I do not plan to put one on it. should I go with the HD's, 5100's, or 5125's ? downsouthmotorsports has on they're website that the 5125's are for a stock truck with no rear lift. They also say the 5100's in the rear are for a truck thats lifted in the rear. Now ive read on a post on here from different ppl that the 5125's are longer than stock and require an adaptor to work on a stock truck. who is correct here ? again I want to leave my rear height stock. Im just looking for a shock thats going to be a little bit beefier than stock but have a great ride. I sure would appreciate someone who knows what the best choice is, and actually knows what they are talking about. Thanks.

    The 5100s are too long for a no lift application.

    The 5125's come in varying sizes, including ones that are short enough for a no lift application. Call DSM, they can help you with calculating the correct length for your application.

    The 5125 will be more expensive that the HDs but are probably a better shock.

    The adapters you've read about are for 2nd gens. 2nd gens have a different top mount. 1st gens do not require an adapter to run any of these 3 models.

    You sure mike? i thought it was 5100s are good for only up to 3'' of lift and stock heights. After 3'' you NEED to get 5125s or 5150s as they come in longer lengths..

    +1 for you sir. Good links.

    Monte, you are correct as far as you go. The RCD spec'd 5100s will handle up to 3" of lift. However, for the OPs circumstances, with no lift or even a slight negative lift due to original springs, the collapsed length of the shock becomes critical.

    A shock will wear out quickly if it is the limiting factor for up travel, which is what happens when the shock is too long.

    Thanks for the info. Mike, so i need to call DSM and get the 5100/5125 combo and ask to get the 5125's in stock length right ? Ive already ordered the one inch spacer for the front, so probably setting the 5100 in the front to .85" plus the spacer would be about right for leveling my truck im guessing, if not just a little under level correct ? I appreciate yall helpin me out, everybody i talk to around here even at the 4x4 centers do not seem to know there a$$ from a hole in the ground. I know im asking a lot of questions so if yall got any kind of electrical or audio questions ask me lol.

    Don't know if this helps, but I have a 2003 Prerunner double cab. I bought my shocks/struts from DSM (Sonny), and got 5100 for the front, and 5125 for the back. Rear is totally stock, probably saggy a little due to the age. No plans to lift rear.

    I put my front 5100's at the middle setting, no spacers or anything just set in the middle and my truck is just about level front to back now. When I first installed the 5100's I was actually a liiiitle nose high, but now I'm just about even.

    I would imagine if you do spacers and the middle, your front end will be really, really nose high. Pics of my truck are in the "5100" install thread somewhere further down in this forum.

    Ugh..spacers..

    if you use the spacer, which i don't recomend, and the 5100 set a the middle setting, i think thats 1.5'' on 1st gens, then you will be a 2.5 up front so you wil be really nose high. Might as well just set the 5100s at 2.5'' and never use the spacer. You'd need an AAL tho to come close to leveling at that point.

    What is the 1" spacer? Is it a spacer kit, one for each side? Keep in mind, if the spacer is 1" thick it will actually lift the truck about 2". If it is 1/2" thick, the supplier might refer to it as a 1" lift spacer. In either case, you really don't need it.

    As others have said, if you go the route of 5100s for the front, set the 5100s spring perch on the middle setting. This will give you about 1.25-1.5" of lift and pretty much level the front with the back.

    No, sorry... I instaled 5100's on my 2005 DC Tacoma with no lift... They are an excellent upgrade shock from the yellow Bilsteins and not expensive. I noticed a better ride and handling, and this was before I installed the Ride Rite air bags (to stop the bottoming-out/ harsh ride).

    I am trying to figure out what that has to do with the OPs 1st gen. I don't even think it is the shock between generations, let alone the compressed and extended lengths.

    Sorry if I missed something... I read someone say a 5100 is too long for a no lift application... and that isn't the case... a 5100 is a direct replacement, heavier duty shock than the stock Bilsteins and no lift is required to fit.

    If I mis-read, I am sorry. Carry on!

    5100s are too long for no lift especially if you have saggy leafs. so you should use 5125s as you can get them shorter for stock replacements.

    OK... well, I put 5100s on my non-lifted/ saggy spring 2005 Taco. They were great. I also owned a 2001 Taco... and they both look pretty much the same under the back side. However, check with Bilstein for the correct application model for your 1st gen Taco!
