Hippie pot heads and stoners are just stereo-types like any other. Everyday you see people who smoke marijuana and don't even know it. Tigerfan, I agree we can both discredit each others sources, however I at least read most of the articles you posted links to, did you at least visit the sites I posted? Can you tell me honestly that you believe the US gov't has never ever lied to its people, dating back 40+ years? Never exaggerated the truth, never told a little lie, or didn't tell the whole story? I would think that you being an officer of the law would be able to see everyday an antique, inefficient, crumbling system, that just isn't working, isn't protecting the citizens your sworn to protect? Here is a site I really think you should visit. http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php LEAP, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.

i havent yet...and i'll respond accordingling when i do......HOWEVER...i do believe in some cases governments lie to their people and usually (though not always) i feel its usually to protect them from something...or for good reason...and no i dont think that the system is completely antiqued, inefficient and crumbling...do i think some changes could be made? sure...gotta adapt to survive...its evolution baby! (random pearl jam lyric)

And yes...i think for the most part it works...because the fear of punishment etc does in fact keep a lot of people from doing something they would otherwise do...

Heres a good question though...if pot is such an incredible business with so much $$ etc...why cant they come up with the funds to out lobby the tobacco companies and get pot legalized?

Well i didn't think stating my opinion classified me as a stoner but i guess that is just the standard stero-typing that comes with the topic.

As far individuals getting hurt by the effects of marijuana i wasn't talking about drug trafficers running down cops when they got stopped, i was talking about simple individuals that smoked or used pot.... but... if it were legal i don't guess there would be any pot drug trafficers fleeing the scene now would there? So it still seems harmless to me

I myself have known many people from many different walks of life, judges/lawyers/cops/hippies/rednecks/yuppies/ and i have yet to see any of these people get violent when stoned unless they were being harassed by cops or were drunk. It's just sad that when someone gets caught with a joint that you have 12 officers show up within 5 mins but when your house is being robbed it takes 1 officer 45 mins to show up. The real screwed up fact about that is, the two places were only 2 miles apart. I'm not stereo-typing you tigerfan because you may very well be a true cop wanting the best for his city but that's not the majority around here.

Talking about side effects: yea the list you gave was pretty lengthy but not nearly as long as a simple antibiodic for a sinus infection....have you ever read the side effects listed with prescription drugs that 80% of people in this country take? The list is longer than i care to read that's for sure.

I just don't like the government trying to make me believe what they want me to and not letting me decide for myself on anything, not just pot. Just like you don't like believing what i'm saying because it is your choice. I just like to look outside the box for the truth and not have B/S forced on me.

I think Timothy Leary said it best when he said " Think for Yourself" or a bumper sticker i once had " Sure you can trust the Government , just go ask an Indian"

Now the way this thread is going i can see that i may have stirred up a little stink with all this but like i said this is just my opinion and for the record i do have my own house/ a high paying job and a new taco that i payed for myself so i don't think i fall into the stoner lazy ass category.

here's a link to some info from my veiw if you want to check it out.

Lets face it Tigerfan we both don't agree but on three things at this point and those are ...... Tacos/ Trails/ and TW... but who knows we might run into each other on trail someday and need each others help.

ftr i said keep toking stoner tongue in cheek...it wasnt meant to describe every person that smokes as a stoner...

like you said...we're not going to agree...but at least we're able to have a friendly discussion on this topic!

i guess every department is different...but around here...unless its a MAJOR bust...we're not going to bring the force...

hell...a few months back there was an officer who got shot on a bust...

6 of our DST guys bested a house and the guy opened up with a .357...

only because an officer got shot and the dealer got killed did we have more than 6 officers on scene

a simple traffic stop bust would consist of 2 or MAYBE 3 officers...1 of those being k9 or a guy with a test kit...

I also dont disagree that some of our prescription meds have a TON of side effects...but again...many of those actually CURE your body of something...not just ease the symptoms to make you a bit less in pain

and i'll check out your link sometime this weekend along with sonjays...i'll go on and tell you it WONT change my mind...but i'll read it

Maybe i seem like i trust the govt too much...but i dont feel like i do...i know that everything isnt always in the peoples best interest...but that usually ends up coming to light and getting straightened out...this little battle has been going on for years...

I only trust the govt as long as i can tell what theyre doing is good for the majority of people here...i guess that kind of goes along the lines of why i have what i have tattooed on my back "trust...but see whom youre trusting"

Now your Police department is there for the right reasons and not there to fill a simple quota by messing with the minor crap. I respect you for that. I guess that's why my opinion is the way it is becasue of how I've seen things done in my town and surrounding counties. I mean there are all kind of meth labs and robberies around here but the cops only want to bust people for a joint or window tint and not go after the real crime.

Hell it's been fun having this conversation and keeping it freindly and i look foward to seeing you on a trail sometime.

Just to add my 2 cents: The laws regarding pot are bad laws on two counts: First, if people act as responsibly while stoned as people who have been drinking--as 98 or 99% percent of dope smokers do--why do we care about the "underlying crime"? Second, we tried prohibition of alcohol waving the same banner of crime and sin. It didn't stop people from drinking and it was a huge incentive to real crime. Perhaps we also realized that if people want to imbibe drugs or alcohol responsibly, its none our business. If there are problems related to drug or alcohol for a person, then we need to deal with it as friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers, and as health and mental-health and pastoral counselors. The treating the folks who have real substance abuse problems might be more likely to seek help if it weren't criminalized.

Were talking about billions of dollars of legal money for tobacco companies. No one really knows how much pot dealers or growers make, they don't pay taxes. I can tell you from personal experience it's a lot of money though. Anyway if they were to try, they would be arrested immediately. It has to be done on there terms, through the proper channels. That takes time, and lawyers. There is plenty of prescription meds that don't cure anything either. But how many prescription drugs will help people that take a hand full of pills multiple times a day, cut back to only a few pills and some marijuana a couple times a day? I haven't watched That 70's Show in a while! Good show though.

There is a lot of money to be made in hemp. Not only that but its green, they can make tons of stuff with it, paper, cloths, plastics, you can eat it, very good source of protein, even ethanol. And apparently it makes the best ethanol, easier to re-fine, and the cannabis plant consumes the same amount of CO2 when its growing, as is released when its burnt as fuel!! Imagine carbon neutral fuel. Crazy stuff hey!

Good link Gonzo that is ideal. Myths, facts and sources cited! I agree with what your saying about the cops. Around here its really bad too. Its much easier for them to arrest and harass people for pot then to fight real crime.

I know a few people in the industry. A good friend of mine also happens to be my dealer. There's a lot more to it then growers and dealers. Its estimated here in BC there is over 100,000 people in the marijuana industry. Making it the 2nd largest industry in BC. I have grown before, for personal use only so I have experience with the plant from seed to harvest.

xedge, I take offense to that remark. I would like to think I am an upstanding member of society, I like tigerfan, try to live my life on the right side of the law, other then marijuana I don't break said law. I have no criminal record, have only 2 speeding tickets, neither excessive, and have never been in jail. I am a class 1 driver so I take driving very seriously. I pay my taxes, I hold the door for little old ladies, or anyone for that matter, if you don't like any of my comments in this thread, please let me know. If you don't have anything constructive to add... there is a useless post's thread.

Took a quick glimpse at the link

    First

since when is 1 in 300 rare?!

    Second

JMO, it's kinda early yet ;)

    1) the whole test group is from one area. One of the highest suicide capitals in the US because of the crap-ass weather. And only 370 men at that.

    2) 1/4% of the patients were pot smokers....ok....6% higher than those who did not have cancer and smoked pot. Still, 25% vs 75% who don't smoke. And one could argue that that people who smoke pot might have a more unhealthy life-style than those who do? AKA smoking cigs, in addition to pot which really helps you getting cancer?

    3) the age group makes no sense. more than likely that is the highest age of pot smoking.

I think they are grabbing at straws with this particular study imo.
