HEADLIGHT LED'S

i am getting some white LED strips to put in my headlight across the bottom. does anybody know how i can wire them to where when i turn my lights of they go off?

 

You could use the marker light wire as a "switch" so when they are turned on, they'll turn on a relay and in turn the LED's will come on. It'd require splicing into the wire but it'd work and the LED's would come on everytime you turn the parking lights on (and would also be on with headlights).

 

Yeah. Just use some of those vampire clips. that way you dont have to actually cut the wire.

 

ok thanks. do u think i need to put a in line fuse on them so if the spark it dont burn my headlight out?

 

I would put an in-line fuse on the power wire, not necessary on the jumper wire from the marker light though.

Tap the parking light circuit, it's already fused. I wouldn't use a vampire clip though. They can tend to cut the parent wire on installation and they don't seal up or anything which opens the door to corrosion. I would carefully strip a 1/2" portion of insulation on the parking light wire, then wrap and solder your wire onto it. Then finish with tightly would electrical tape.

 

I'd heat shrink in stead of electrical tape. Better seal. You're probably right about just tapping in though, I doubt those LED's have much draw to where they'd require they own ciruit.

 

would you even be able to get a piece of heat shrink on there without cutting the wire?

 

You'd have to slice the heat shrink (Sounds useless but it works!) It's a pain to get it to shrink the way you want it when it's sliced but it does work. I usually wrap it with electrical tape afterwards but the heat shrink first definitely helps keep the splice dry and protected.

I usually run with headlights on day or night to improve my visibility to others, but a string of bright LED's as running lights (similar what Audi and other euro companies are now doing) could be a possible alternative. I'd like to know how this turns out.

Have you got any more pics of the lights, where did you get the LED's?

 

I bought string LED's at Advance Auto Parts. I have not installed them yet, but it looks like it would be easy to just wire them up by tapping into the marker light or headlight wires. They come with 3M tape so they just stick on.

 

think I know what you're talking about, I used the same to mount in my bed, they're pretty dam bright and mount easily.
