Welcome to TW! Amsoil all the way, thats some good shit! most automotive stores have there amsoil display out on the counter the one you spin the wheel and watch the oil climb to the high gear versus the other oils that just stay on the bottom.

That's difinitely Lucas and its pure crapola and the best way to buy Amsoil is to become a PC. I get Amsoil from AmericanLubes.

I just switched to Amsoil. I would of went with Mobil 1 due to popular opinion until I found out I could buy Amsoil from the Napa in town. I have always been an Amsoil fan but never wanted to buy an oil on-line. Amsoil once a year with a Napa Platinum sythetic filter is the plan right now.

I put Amsoil 5wt-30 in the engine and Redline MT 90 in the manual transmission. Improved shifting, very nice. Now I can drop to a little lower RPM and get back up to speed without the engine "growl". With a 2.7 and high gears that is a small but nice improvement.

The majority of AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are formulated with polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base stocks. PAO base stocks offer unsurpassed protection and performance and are widely recognized as the industry's premier base stock technology. Unlike conventional base stocks, PAO base stocks contain fully saturated, hydrogenated molecules that are free of wax and impurities, allowing superior performance in temperature extremes, oxidation and acid resistance and clean operation. Synthetic oils formulated with less expensive synthetic base stocks also offer performance benefits over conventional oils, but they cannot match the performance of PAOs for the high standards required for AMSOIL synthetic.

    Read more: http://www.smartsynthetics.com/amsoil-synthetic-pao-basestock.htm#ixzz1XJp8z6ON

    AND MOBIL 1

Synthetic motor oils contain a high proportion of base stocks created from pure chemicals. Since synthetic base stocks such as PAO are essentially pure chemicals themselves they avoid the performance limitations imposed by the impurities present in conventional and hydroprocessed base oils. PAO synthetic base oils are therefore pure compounds containing none of the impurities found in conventional base oils derived from crude oil, as mentioned earlier.

In addition, chemically derived synthetic base stock technology allows the base oil molecules to be designed specifically for particular lubrication applications with purpose designed features such as the exact desired viscosity, superior viscosity stay in grade capability, low volatility etc. Synthetic base stocks can also be specifically tailored to suit different additives required for different applications. Additionally because synthetic oils are ‘pure’ they contribute lower emissions and are kinder to catalytic converters. Synthetic oils can also be engineered to have less internal molecular friction allowing an engine to develop maximum power and provide best possible economy.

Synthetics can therefore be "tailored" to suit specific lubrication applications. The molecular engineering that goes into chemically derived synthetic base stocks enable a base oil to be designed for a specific purpose. For example specific base oil molecules have been designed for use in Mobil Jet Oil II (which is used by 70% of the world’s commercial jet aircraft). Similarly and very specific Mobil 1 formulations have been designed for Formula 1 racing applications. This same highly specific molecular engineering approach has been used to design the best base oil molecules for use in consumer synthetic motor oils such as Mobil 1.

I thought I read somewhere that Amsoil was the only one that used 100% base oil from that long word they are talking about, Polysomething. I didn't find it though. Wording is tricky in these adds.

I'm pretty sure of one thing after reading tons of this stuff. You should definitely use oil in an engine, but that seems to be the only thing everybody agrees on. It sounds like synthetics can be better if made right. And there is less chance of getting impurities with synthetics than with dino oil. Stuff like sulfur and I don't know what else.

But is this true or is this something put out by synthetic oil stock holders to increase the value of their stocks??????

One more thing that bothers me is, If synthetic oil can be "tailored" to do what you want, why does Mobil 1 tailor theirs for shorter life than Amsoil at about the same price?

Funny how much Mobil 1 is used here, obviously a lot of people have had really good luck with this oil but I do not use it. Kendal is my oil of choice after hearing about all the damage Mobil 1 oil caused in so many power boats that my previous boss told me about while I spent a 2 year stretch under his wing {I used to be a power boat mechanic}, a lot of money made in motor replacements because of this oil. Not trying to start anything, just my experience....... Bearing failure was the biggest problem by the way.

I have a coworker that has a trd tacoma and he uses amsoil every 10k and the amsoil filter as well. He says it is like thick black coffee when he changes his oil with maybe 40-50k miles on it. That is enough for me to to say no way to that. Every 5k with m1 or similar and a decent filter for me.

Remember that even if the oil is top of the line and works better than anything else, there still is going to be contamination with blow by no matter what you do, and after so many miles, the contaminants will increase. Only solution is to change the oil more frequently.

According to an AMSOIL rep you can go 400k on AMSOIL without a single oil change.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/182460-bs-im-done-amsoil-10.html#post3964933

I'm sure AMSOIL is good (not saying it's trash) but there's no way in hell it's as good as the company that sells it would have you believe. I love their site too, they have 'customer testimonials' and one of them claims a dude drove nearly 100 miles with NO oil in the pan or motor. Attributed the motor not blowing to AMSOIL being made of magical pixie dust. Sorry, I don't buy it.

Damn motor oil threads, I need to stay out of 'em.

    Mobil1 all the way :D.

Your coworker must not really like his engine much. Oil analysis is KEY to extended OCIs...Just throwing whatever extended life oil in there and a clean filter now and again isn't going to work out great.

It's Shell's formulation for heavy duty diesel use if I recall correctly??

It is probably very high in ZDDP anti-wear additive. EPA has made oil mfr's lower ZDDP way, way down in modern gasoline motor oils (API SM and SN) 'cause the posphorus (the P part) poisons catalytic converters. They compensated with other anti-wear additives (mainly molybdenum).

ZDDP is a very effective anti-wear additive for lifter and cam protection. Really important in diesels 'cause they operate with much higher pressure, but then they don't have catalytic converter's to keep healthy either.

[IMG] I've been running with Castrol GTX 5/30 and for the price I am very pleased. I have Royal Purple in the ass end but can't get over the price of their motor oil. Is the $h*t that good?

I have 11,363 miles on my 2007 350Z today. Two weeks ago I had to top off a 1/2 of quart as I downshift all the time at 6500 RPM. That is with one oil change. Was it Mobil 1 or Amsoil? I'll let you guess but a lot of people fall for Mobile's hype as a full synthetic. Only one brand says 100% synthetic. For the newbies full synthetic is between 60% and 75% synthetic depending on the brand. I use Amsoil AZO and my next oil change will be in December when I expect the odometer will be at 14,000 miles on this oil change:D. Wake up and smell the roses old timers!!!

Downshift at 6500 RPM too much and you'll be needing a lot more than a quality oil...
