Computer Monitor Advice...LCD

I have a basic understanding of Television / Monitor technology. I am looking to set up a home office. I have a laptop that I want to attach two monitors too. I want to be able to read fine print text on screen without any problems. I will be looking at financial data from the market and want to have a monitor that shows crisp images without blurry text. I am looking at monitors that are 23-24 inches in size. The monitors will be placed in a room that will have direct sunlight coming into the room, so glare is a concern. I will likely put up some curtains or something to help with that.

I have been looking at LCD LED monitors. It seems this is going to get the best crisp and distinct image for what I am trying to accomplish. I want to go with trusted, stable brands with a proven track record. My ideal price range will be in the $200-300 range per monitor.

I am looking for flat screens that wont take up my entire desk, so CRT's are not appealing to me, but not completely written out of the question.

I am not really into gaming at all.

so in summary, what I am trying to accomplish is

1. Crisp, vibrant contrast of images (no blurry images)
2. Clearly discernable on-screen text (no-blurry text)
3. preferrably a screen that doesnt cause capture alot of glare from the outside, but I can adapt if I need too.
4. $200-300 range
5. 23-24 inch monitor, doesnt take up alot of space as far as depth goes.
6. I expect to have cable TV. My buddy suggested I get one with a TV Tuner in it as well.

Am I on the right track? What monitors or brands do you recommend?

So far I am looking at LG, Dell, Samsung, Asus, ect.

I have use an Asus and I am very happy with it.

At first I purchased a Vizio tv to use as a monitor and tv by switching the input. Using it as a monitor using HDMI cable (my PC has HDMI output) the image was not very crisp. As a TV its not noticeable.

So I purchased the Asus monitor and it looks great with either HDMI or DVI cable.

I recommend searching newegg.com and reading the reviews there. I have rarely found a better deal somewhere else.

Whatever you do, never step foot in a best buy. (I'm Best Buy free since 2004 and proud of it.)

Tigerdirect.com or if you are lucky & have a Tigerdirect store in your area(I DO) for monitors. Best prices for anything computer related. Fry's also has good prices & selections. Best Buy doesn't have a good selection.

Stay away from these brands: ACER, Gateway. Cheap components used & won't last.

Best thing to look for is a docking station for your laptop. I would check with your laptop manufacturer for the docking station.

FYI: For those not familar with how a docking station works: Basically the docking station sits on the desk. The monitors, keyboard, & mouse are plugged into it along with ethernet(unless doing wifi). You plug you laptop(lid close) into the docking station when working at the desk. Then you use the attached equipment to work off your laptop.

 

Some docks don't require the lid to be closed (which is what I prefer). That way you can use your Laptop's monitor as a screen and extend the desktop to the external monitor.

OP: If you have a big laptop screen, you don't need to buy two monitors. Just hook one monitor to your laptop and extend the screen (assuming Windows).

 

Also, if you only have one video out port, you'll need some kind of splitter for a dual external monitor setup:

I wanted to add a second monitor for my home laptop setup for video and picture editing.
At work I use Dell model U2410 & 2209WA monitors.

The U2410 is pricey but a beautiful monitor set up with my laptop.
My laptop's screen serves as a second screen. as NM said.
The 2209s are running off another desktop I use.

Since the U2410 is too expensive, I went to all the local stores to look at monitors & shopped/researched on the web.
I almost pulled the trigger a couple of times thru Tiger Direct and Amazon (Viewsonic) but always, always came back to Dell.
Sooo...
I pulled the trigger on a Dell U2311. It was on sale at Dell for 249.
Totaly price shipped $249.
I have been really happy with my decision. Its a nice compromise to the U2410. This was back in Mar fwiw.
