Do you have the documentation from your 30,000 mile service as to the pad thickness then (to compare)?

Almost 60K here, and pads are over 5mm. My last Tacoma needed pads at 90k miles. Must be the Atrac that eats them up, or using brake modulation more off road.

Just sayin....The brakes are used to control the spinning tire, and being as he off roads often in sandy conditions (judging by the past posted pics), this could be the reason behind the early brake wear...

I don't know why folks link mileage with brake wear. It is a function of how many times you push the brake pedal not the mileage.

My truck went about 40k. It was a twisty mountain road truck.

I don't spin in sand except when doing a test to show you guys what happens in the various drive modes (see those posts)...

In sand, I am in High Range with tires deflated... no spinning.. no rooster tails... no A-TRAC.

Thats me, and it was down. Yes, a shit load of sand got into the cab. I made one run up that hill already, and a guy thought it looked cool, and wanted to take a pic. So I had the window down so I could hear him tell me when to hit it.

:D It's fun to drive in, it is not always easy, it is easy to get out of (if stuck), and it is clean... compared to getting into mud!

Here are some sand photos from 2005 to 2009 with my '01 and '05 Tacomas in Baja California:

    Agree with Chris
Every time traction control kicks in its equivalent of riding the brakes. Lucky for you only "spin" condition happens when you go offroading once a while. What if you were using that daily for few months of the year?
Hence why Electronic Traction Control is a stupid system for those that do not live in the city.
I have it on another car and it blows in the winter and costs in brake pads and rotors. Brake fluid needs to be replaced often and brakes bleed.

The only time traction control works in the city is on non-dry days when you speed away at a turn or from a stop. In dirt/ sand/ snow, the traction control shines at moving the truck. The first thing I noticed when I first took my 2010 Tacoma onto the beach is that I could drive about at full pressure with TRAC in H4, where my previous Tacomas all would have required deflating.

My traction control only brakes a tire without traction so power transfers to the tire with traction... This affect keeps you moving. If you have an open differential only, and a tire has no traction, you stop moving as that tire spins and the 'good one' does nothing. That (to me) is more like stepping on the brakes!

If you see the videos, TRAC doesn't engage immediatley on a spinning tire, there is some delay... so it only brakes it after your non-traction tire has been spinning a few seconds. A-TRAC is nearly instant, and it doesn't just slow the non-traction tire, it matches its rotation to the traction tire (as a locked differential does). There is no 'braking' that slows the truck. This traction control braking keeps the truck moving when conditions normally would stop it.

    ;)

Mine doesn't. Mine immediately kicks on the second a tire is in the air... which is pretty much all the time when I'm off-road. Yesterday was case in point. A-TRAC is great, TRAC is not. Granted I should have just turned it off but I was lazy...

It could be that those of us with OFF ROAD 4WDs have a faster acting TRAC because we have the hydraulic brake booster? I was using the videos I have seen posted that were showing the 4-LO TRAC MOD that the SPORT TRDS need to do to get traction control in low range. They only have a vacuum brake booster... and I see the tires spin a lot before the trac comes on. ??

It might also have to do with my 33's and fox all around.... keep in mind that I'm averaging about 20mph on stuff stock could barely scrape by at 5mph lol..
