You are right on Canada dbl cab, 6 speed only comes with a 5ft box....US offers the s/box I believe. I cant think of any reason why we cant get a long box in your configuration. I have a dblcab 6spd, 5ft box.

So I've been mulling this topic over in my head all day. Started to examine the access cab possibility for myself.

Question for the access cabs guys:
How much stuff can you conveniently carry and access back there? How about if you have a passenger, how squishy is it?

Any body got some dimensions of the access cab vs double cab?

Would be interesting to see some pics posted of some gear or people in the rear of access cab.

    Cheers
    Rusty

The difference is one foot. The DCSB and AC have the same frame. SB is 5' box, AC is 6' box. AC has child tiedown points on BOTH sides. The driver's side has full INFANT hooks (face backwards), the passenger side has just child hooks (face forwards). The back seat in an AC is acceptable for average sized female, male up to about 15 years old. Not particularly comfortable, but can be improved with a lower back pillow.

Take a look at the interior 360's here: http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/interior-360.html

** choose the OVERHEAD view and switch between DC and AC. You will see that the DC has much thicker seat backs. The DC seats themselves will obviously be more comfortable, but contrary to what you might expect, there isn't really all that much extra space there.

Very informative post and your first here. Welcome.

I'd love to see someone drive an access cab with a rear-facing child car seat strapped in behind them. I seriously think it's not even possible. :notsure: It's hard enough with a double cab. :ballchain:

I feel your pain OP. one word of advice...

    DO NOT settle for AC!

You'll regret it more than if you settle for AUTO.

I have children and I wouldn't even consider putting them in the back of an AC's "jump seats", much less another adult.

I researched your dilema for months before landing my DC 6 spd used, and I had to have it shipped.

Not only does Toyota NOT make the 6spd in a DCLB, but you can't get certain configs, like 4X4 DC in certain regions.

Consider towing a trailer for your gear if you absolutly have to have manual.

Also, the gearing of the manual tranny is such that 6th is geared so low for torque, that highway milage SUX! If I keep it at 66 mph on the hwy, I MIGHT get 18.5mpg, and that's with a tail wind. Anything over 70 and you'll be lucky to get 16mpg. So if you're the kind of guy that likes to haul more than just gear, your mpg will take a nose dive.

I'm with you in that I've drivin standard all my life. The thought of riding the brake at every red light and not having the ability to downshift through a turn kept me fixed on 6spd. But don't think you'll be getting a high performance sports car experience either.

Hope that helps with your decision.

You can shift with the auto .

Wanna drop it down a gear in a turn ?

Grab shifter , drop it down a gear or two .

    That was easy

    Hi, thanks! :D

You know, I actually considered this when I was deciding to buy. I am engaged to an amazing girl (who had a bit of a feminist streak to her, but I've managed to convince her that calling her a 'girl' implies youth and beauty ;)), and we are planning on having kids very soon after marriage (spring 2012), so this was actually a factor. There were actually a few things that came to mind when considering the child seat issue....

The first is that there are different designs of child seats available, many of which are more suitable for a confined space. Some will obviously be enormous and not fit, so it becomes partly a question of selecting one that is most suitable for the vehicle.

The next thing that I considered is that *I* require the seat to be positioned much further back than she does. When she is driving, there is a huge amount of space between the driver's seat and the back wall. No question that a child seat would fit.

The final thing that I noted is that the bolts for the seat belt straps on the passenger side are very accessible, so it would be quite simple to install d-rings (like the bed tiedown hoops) for securing an infant seat on the passenger side. This would be legally required since they don't like it when you secure the child seat using the actual seat belt.

Great point, and this is exactly my worry, I've been trying to convince myself into an AC since this thread started. My current SUV is 20yrs old, and I promised myself a stick shift. But that's the way the Taco cookie crumbles I guess.

A lot of good points and advice offered. I figure the AUTO will leave me with less regret than the AC. I guess you can't have your Taco Cake and eat it too

I was even willing to ship the perfect Taco from anywhere in the U.S to Canada border.

I tend to keep vehicle for a long time and in really good shape, this is why this is such a dilemma for me. Just trying to cover all my major requirements etc.

Cheers to all the great info given

P.S anyone got a pic of a bigger quad in the box of long bed they can post?

Get 2009+ 4x4 DCSB TRD Off Road 6 speed with tow package, then get a trailer... Bam you get what you wanted and also hauling capacity which is better than DCLB!

u know how squishy it is? i dont, cuz i dont really care since im never going to be the one sittin back there. i have carried plenty of people that are 6ft tall back there. they complained but i told them if they didnt want to ride they can get out. they shut up pretty quick.

on the rear facing child seat, i bet i could put one back there. im only 5'5 and my seat is way up. also, if i had to do it over again, i would say fuck this 6sp man and go with an auto. i fuckin hate this transmission. its garbage. makes no sense in half of the gearing they put in it. the 5spd i had in my 92 toyota pickup was fun to drive, not this 6sp tho. at all

its not too bad in back of an AC, i think most kids from 3-10 would have no trouble with it. i have had to sit back there for awhile and it is not bad as long as the guy in front moves the seat up a little to clear my knees, i could probably last 2 hours back there before i would need to get out and move around, for the record i am 5'11"

it is not as bad as sitting in the back of my buddy's 1987 Mazda B2600 4x4 pickup, its tiny back there, i have to sit with my legs stretched out and my back against the panel below the window to be comfortable back there.
