Well, if I do that to my rig I come out with 20.xx mileage instead of 19.9... Doesn't matter much.

Agreed. My '07 4x4 usually sits around 19.5 for mixed driving. I've seen 23 a few times, but that was on road trips and like 90% highway. I guess the larger/wider profile of the 2nd gen 4x4's really knocks back the mpg (or maybe increased loss in the 4wd drive train?), because the 4x2 seems to get ~4mpg or so better across the board.

 

The best mileage that I've seen from 4x4 guys is about 25-26 on pure highway trips. Most are in the low 20's.

 

I averaged just under 23.5 MPGs on that last tank. Went a tad over 420 miles on 18.07 gallons.

The cold weather is starting to rear it's ugly head though.

 

Drove from philly to chicago today and averaged 23.5 mpg cruising 60-75 sometimes into a head wind (through ohio) and hills galore (western pa).

 

I got 26 once.. literally had the wind at my back and 100% highway though lol. About what it takes to get in the mid 20's for me. I wonder if that urd supercharger would help or hurt....

 

usually helps. All my 3.4 supercharged wheeling buddies get better gas mileage. A super charger makes more power by making the engine more efficient. As long as you aren't full throttle all the time, you'll get better mileage.

 

If you can keep it out of boost, you'll generally see better mileage.

 

Filled up today.

510.9 miles on 18.088 gallons or 28.2 MPG. Maybe 30% highway miles.

 

2.7L - 4cyl - 4x4 (not lifted)

I got 22-23mpg last time I went out. But that was 30miles of 4x4 trails and 1.5miles of rock crawling in 1st gear L4 on a fire access lane around a lake. Then about 120miles of hilly highway. I found a great price on gas so I filled up after 180miles at just under 8 gallons. I haven't been able to clock pure highway miles in the last 3 months. & 26mpg is the highest I've ever seen (not exceeding 65-70mph highway).

Lowest I've seen is <13mpg in -20F weather. I was running on 3 cylinders. Had a misfiring sparkplug and still didn't get a check engine light. XD I freaked out filling up 15.5 gallons well under 200miles on the OD. I regard those days as the dark days when I seriously considered selling the truck - as my friends Yaris got well over 40mpg.

We'll see how much the numbers change once winter hits. It's was in the 50's today, so winter is on the way.

 

How much does added weight affect mileage? I added a rubber bed mat, a roll-up tonneau cover, and a small tool box under the cover. Total added weight is about 100 lbs. I also want to add a trailer hitch, which will be another 45-50 lbs or so. Will I see my mileage decrease?

 

Shouldn't see any kind of significant MPG drop or anything.

If you were talking big ol' tires and front/rear bumpers, that would be a different story.

 

^Yup. 150 lbs in the bed of the truck isn't much. Additional rotating mass makes a huge difference.

 

thank ya. I'm also hoping to see an eventual rise in MPG over the next (first) 5000 miles. They say that new cars these days don't require to be broken in specially, but cleanMPG.com mentions that fuel economy will improve once it's broken in. Thanks again for all the good info guys.

 

Break in time does have an effect on mileage, as does you learning how to drive the truck, and the automatic learning your driving technique.

 

what about keeping the windows down vs A/C? Which is more fuel efficient?

 

Most efficient under all circumstances - windows up/ AC off.

If you need to cool down...
Most efficient under 55 - windows down.
Most efficient above 55 - AC on.
