Sorry for the slow response, this is what I found:

    4H: VSC OFF
    4L: VSC OFF
4L+Locker: VSC OFF, TRAC OFF*, ABS OFF*

*Correct me if I'm wrong, but TRAC and ABS are OFF when they are lit right? VSC is obviously off when it says VSC OFF on the dash, but with ABS and TRAC(squiggly lines), I just assume that their illumination on the gauge cluster means that they have been disengaged...

Right. So you have TRAC in 4L since the swervy car light is not on in 4L (rear dif unlocked). Only VSC OFF is lit.

A tricky dirt hill will verify 100%.

Hard to say... the 2006 system is not the same as the 2009+ system we know so much about. Generally, VSC and TRAC are always on together. So if VSC is off, then so is TRAC. To do the VSC OFF mode is to have open differentials and no traction control.

An exception (on '09+) is 2WD's 'AUTO LSD', up to 30 mph, then VSC comes back on. Of course Toyota calls AUTO LSD: 'TRAC OFF', but it is traction control without engine regulation (the same as is TRAC in H4).

But I proved what you and others are saying to be wrong (that pre 2009 trucks do not have TRAC, or have it in 4H or HL).

My 2007 has TRAC, and it IS on in 4H and 4L when VSC is off. I also have the option to turn TRAC off while in 4H and 4L. Look at the pictures I posted in my previous post.

It sounds like Brett is about to confirm that his 2006 has TRAC on in 4H and 4L as well.

EDIT: I don't mean for that to sound negative or insulting. Were just having fun testing and learning about the pre 2009 trucks. You guys have been a great help.

David K (or any other 2009+ OR), would you mind posting a picture of this exclusive to 2009+ hydraulic brake booster? I'm inclined to say that I have ATRAC, without the name designition (though I can't run it with the rear locked, yet). My tires do not spin NEAR as much as the Yoytoda's videos. My truck recognizes slip almost immediately in 4L with TRAC on.

I think pointing out what exactly this 2009+ hydraulic brake booster is, will confirm/deny my inclination. I want to see if I have it. I'm betting I do.

    Thanks.

Do I need to take a pic of the door placard to show what year the truck is? ;)

Thanks for the comfirmation, Blue T.

I wish I had my window sticker so I wouldn't have to go through this uncertainty :(. Thank goodness for TacomaWorld.

My 07 has just about every option that was available back then. Reading between the current models with a-trac and the older ones with trac gets pretty confusing...this thread is helping though. On mine I believe while in 4wd the vsc is automatically off and the trac is automatically on (unless the rear is locked while in 4lo.) Unless I'm mistaking the trac off mode only works in 2wd.

Good!! That's what I was hoping to do. Help all of us 2005-2008 guys figure out our systems.

Your 2007 looks identical to mine. So everything I've said so far, applies to you.

TRAC (might as well be called ATRAC) is on automatically in 4H and 4L, but it is OFF in 4L RR Dif locked.

There's a 'hack' that allows us to use (A)TRAC in 4L RR dif locked, but that's for another time.

EDIT: And YES, VSC is OFF as soon as you switch to four wheel drive. It is separate from (A)TRAC.

The advantage 2007-2008 (A)TRAC equipped trucks have over 2005-2006 (A)TRAC equipped trucks is that 07-08 trucks can turn (A)TRAC off or on at the push (for three seconds) of the swervy car button. 05-06 trucks do not have this button.

I should have started our own thread for us 2005-2008 guys.

You mentioned your able to turn the traction control off by pressing the the vsc switch while in 4wd? I always thought that wasn't possible since according to my owners manual... "the traction control off mode only works in 2wd". After reading the manual many times (and getting more confused each time) i just assumed the vsc off switch on the dash didn't even operate when 4wd was engaged.

    Correct.

Traction control (TRAC) is on automatically, but can be turned of by pressing the vsc off switch for a few seconds until the swervy car light turns on.

Go try it in the driveway and report back. It will help others know that my truck was not modified.

According to my 2007 owners manual under "Traction Control Off Mode" it can be turned off (while in 2wd drive mode only) by briefly pushing the "vsc off" switch. It goes on to say "The "auto lsd" and slip indicator lights will come on. The vsc control system is always activated, even if the traction control system is off."
"To turn the traction control back on: briefly push the "vsc off" switch once again. When you push and hold the "vsc off" switch for 3 seconds or more with the vehical stopped you turn off the vsc system.

I know these owners manuals aren't the best on explaining things. Does yours make mention that the vsc switch can be operated and the traction control can be turned off while in 4wd? If so where is in the manual?

I have my 2006 window sticker and have highlighted the year and optional package in the following picture, which I just took. I have no VSC OFF or RSCA OFF buttons.

My manual says nothing about turning the TRACtion control off while in 4wd. One day I just held the vsc switch down to see what happened, and that's when I discovered you can turn TRACtion control off.

If you have your truck handy, go give it a try. I bet you can do it.

    Nice.

I'm betting your TRACtion control is on fulltime in 4wd with no option to shut it off since you don't have a button.
