Exactly... So why the fuck did Toyota make it drop to the lower power setting when the truck is moving and the engine running instead of the other way around?

I think mine is set to 100 watts when the engine is not running and 400 when running in park.

Yeah, that's how it works, but as soon as you shift out of park (or push the clutch in a manual) it drops to 100W. So if you have a cooler or something in the bed that draws more than 100W if won't work while you're driving. I'm thinking like a cooler or warmer to maintain food or drink on a long trip. It would be nice to do that, but sorry it won't work like that from the factory. Kinda stupid IMO. I mean, it's not big enough to run most useful tools while parked so why not run a larger appliance while driving? Unless it's a "safety" feature for idiots that would make margaritas while driving....

    Edit:
Mine will do 400W with the engine off and key turned to ON so it's not a battery conserving thing.

All in all the bed inverter is a pretty useless.
Sounds like a nice option until you know how it works.

The only useful thing I've found for the inverter is for hooking up some lights when I am launching or messing with the boat in the dark and I don't want to waste batteries in my flashlights. One of the things I thought of when I saw it was for a compressor but that was nixed after I plugged it in and it didn't turn on.

Does anyone know if I could plug a power strip into it? I'm going for a camper shell camping rig and I'm trying to figure how to power some stuff in the bed.

I would think a power strip would be fine as long as your combined load is less then the 400w

The power strip won't make a difference. What you plug into the power strip will. Every item will have a label stating what it's power usage is, usually in watts, add those up and see if they exceed the output of the outlet. 400 watts isn't much, 100w is very little.
