To slow down on an incline should I...

Turn off over-drive?
Drop it down to 2?
Drop it down to L?

I heard riding the brakes is bad for your pads/rotors...

How about going UP a steep incline?

I think you mean how to slow down on a decline right?? no need to use much brakes to slow down on an incline. but id say it depends on how fast your going. 35-50 turn off your over drive. 25-35 2nd gear and never use L to slow down. Like a stick you never downshift into 1st while moving.

PS. its an automatic transmission not transition

 

and if you need to brake, do short strong bursts to slow you down under desired speed, then let yourself speed back up till you need to slow down again, then another short strong brake.

 

Brakes are made for a reason. I don't think it would hurt your tranny to much as long as you know what your doing and not letting it over-rev. I'll just stick to using my brakes. Rotors and pads are cheaper to replace than a transmission. :2cents:

I usually turn off the O/D when going down hills on freeways when there's traffic. People are always pumping there breaks like idiots every 5 seconds. I normally break only once or twice out of the whole hill or hills because of the stupid drivers.

^^ this. i do this too. if we can get people to drive in traffic like this and learn how to merge we would all be better off.

going down a steep hill ill use the gears to slow me down, they didn't put them there for no reason. But i also use the brakes too. combination of both wont do anything bad

 

it depends on how steep and how slow you want to go... if on road go turn off o/d, if you want to go slower continue down the shifter, just make sure you dont over rev.

for going up, your an auto it'll know what gear to be in


If you are talking about offroad, there is no problem with going straight to L if your descending a steep slope...

Thank you. Agreed, 4lo/1st gear is perfectly fine for descents with an Auto Trans.

Unless you ride your brake, then they over heat and then you will probably boil the fluid and then no more brakes and you crash and die.

I have a steep hill in my neighborhood about 3 blocks long I use 2nd gear to keep it at the 35mph posted speed limit.

 

The lower gears of your transmission are made for a reason too...read your owners manual or any literature on hill climbing/descending steep hills with a automatic transmission.
