My truck is a 5speed 4x4 but it is not a TRD model, so it does not have the diff. locker in the rear. I understand ARB makes one and it works exactly like the TRD does. Would it be better to get the ARB setup or get the toyota locker ? Has anybody takin they're truck to toyota and got the locker installed, how much was it, or is this something i could probably do myself in the shop if i got the parts.

Converting the 8.4 to accept the Toyota E locker is doable, but I hope you are not scared of welding, grinding, drilling and tapping your axle housing. Do a google search for it, there are plenty of writeups out there on how to do it.
Here's one to get you started
    http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/electric_locker/

The ARB air locker is far more plug and play, but it's going to cost you some coin. The locker itself is around $850 not including the compressor. Compressor prices range depending on which one you get. Installation prices also range from shop to shop. Typically about $500 if you let them do the whole thing. Add another $200 if you regear the 3rd member at the same time.

ARB uses air pressure from an onboard compressor to engage the locker. Toyota uses an electric motor... not quite the same.

The ARB is nothing like the TRD E locker. You need OBA to run ARBs. In other words about 500-1000 more bucks. ARBs are supposed to be stonger tho. You do have to tamper with the original diff housing tho, in order to get air into the housing.

Easist way is to find an E locker 3rd member and swap it into your truck. Should only be about 300-500 bucks. You simply swap out 3rd members, or entire diffs, and then just some simple wiring.

Conceptually they are the same, that being they are both a SELECTABLE LOCKER.

You could not be more wrong. The third members do not just swap.

Here's a visual on the housings for you. 8.4 on the left, TRD 8.0 on the right.

Ah well thanks jason. So I shall revise my statement. Easy way would be to sway in an entire ted e locker. Finding one though is a different story..

To swap in an e-locker, you need the rear axle housing and the third member. If you're a 4x4, the gear ratio in the new third needs to be the same as your old one.

Correct. As most trds are 4.30 and opens are 4.10

I have a similar thing in the works. At least I hope. I have a Trd sport, wanting to swap an axle from a member who has an e locker rear. Straight axle swap. What would need to happen to make it actually work in my truck?

    OK,

swap out your entire rear end is going to be cheaper than buying an ARB ???

If you SHOP dealers for an ARB set-up they can be had for decent $$$$$..

Who would not CUT a deal with a customer about to purchase $12-1500 of NEW parts and installation ????;)

You then have a NEW selectable locker and On -board air with ARB's warranty behind it....

Now the arguement will be made that an E-locker is Toyota and tested tough BUT you still have to re-install the locker( or rear-end), switches, wiring harness and the little misc. that always happens....

Again ,your choice but out of the 2 ....ARB just seems easier.....

Then again complicate it more and choose any of the other "Locker combo's" out there too.....Auburn gear as an example.....

It is going to be significantly cheaper. Literally swapping axles cheap. Now the only thing I do not know about, it wiring. That is my true question. I know it will bolt directly up. But will it wire up easily????

    Manual transmission TRD's are 4.10's

Swap the axle and manually wire up the elocker to a switch.

Again, as I posted earlier, review this how to.
    http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/electric_locker/

In the middle is the information on wiring.
