I get 17 miles to the U.S. gallon in my 96' 3.4 v6 with 178,000 miles on it. I have noticed when its cold out (20's or below) the mpg goes way down?.?. I don't idle for longer than 2-3 minutes. Any body got clue why?

I pickup my 09 4cly 5spd 2wd access cab tomorrow from Billings. I don't expect to get close to sticker mileage numbers until the 1000-3000 mile break in period.

For the folks concerned/whining about mileage, remember the numbers on the sticker were cooked up on the EPA test course in very controlled conditions. Granted the EPA did revise the test procedures slightly for 07(?) onward. So the numbers on the sticker should be a more realistic representation of how the vehicle will perform.

However, consistent driving outside the "ideal" test conditions will result in less mileage. Performance modifications will usually penalize your mileage results. www.fueleconomy.gov discusses the EPA test loop.

OK! I don't know exactly what models and mods you guys are having on your trucks or even if you're using the Imperial Gallon or whatever Gallon we use in the states, but I've never gotten over 19 on my truck when it was stock. the entire tank on the freeway with no stops. Now, with the lift and the slightly bigger tires, I barely get 16 hwy and 12 city. And that's calculated with the final ratio difference. What am I doing wrong? Did I miss a software update from the manufacturer? I know my driving habits aren't that freakin bad.

I don't know what the sticker numbers are, but I'll bet you'll get 22 or 23 on your first tank, unless you're a leadfoot.

Yeah, the crappy gas mileage and the the given vibrations (lift) make it an irresistable thought.

Look, It's not as bad as you think. I love my truck, I love the way in feels and looks, and I wouldn't give it up for anything. I knew the gas milage would suck, but I wanted it the way it is now.

I've been resetting the Odometer every time I've filled up since the day I bought it (Dec 14 08) and in City driving I am getting 16 - 17 MPG. The one trip I did take on the highway I got around 21 MPG. I didn't expect much more when I bought it...although it always sucks going from a vehicle getting 26 MPG in city to a vehicle getting 17 MPG in city....BUT I love my Taco....:)

Just bought a 2005 Tacoma double cab, TRD, V6, 4L, has about 125000kms(78000 miles) and I am getting very poor mileage. I'm not talking a couple mpg, I am getting only 9MPG's, when I should be getting anywhere from 16 - 20mpg. So for you metric people, I am getting about 300kms per tank, when I should be getting 500+. I replaced the air filter (with a K&N), and spark plugs. I know that tire pressure, air tempurature and how I take off at a green light affects my fuel cunsumptin, but not that much. Something is causing my truck to drink the gas and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas?

So I took the airbox off and the secondary filter was filthy, just as bad as the replaceable (I think the last owner drove through a sand dune, lol). So I took it out and now I'm just running on the K&N. Also the MAF did have some carbon build-up, so I gave that, the airbox and hoses a good deep cleaning. When I put it all together and drove around the block, I noticed a big difference, I didn't have to push on the gas as much to take off and when I let go of the gas, she never slowed down as quick and coasts much better. So I filled the tank, threw in some Lucas Injector cleaner, and reset the odo trip and we'll see if it helps the mileage at all. Thanks alot for the replies, it helped alot and I will let you all know if it works at all and will post any other tips or tricks that I learn. This is my first Tacoma, I like it so far and lets hope it impresses me more than my ZR2 did, Cheers!

I just vacuumed out all the dust and sand particles, gave it a good wipe with a damp cloth, rinsed it, wiped it dry, and sat it front of the dehumidifier to dry all day.
