Painting fender flares

I have stock red fender flares on my 01 Red Tacoma. I want black ones, is it a bad idea to paint them or will it look like crap shortly after? Any thoughts?

 

I was thinking the same thing....any other input from anyone else?

 

I rattle canned mine and they look awesome. They have been that way for two years now and still looking good.

 

Its all in the prep work!

If you sand them down good and prime them good and sand again and prime. Then 3-4 coats of paint and 3 coats of clear coat and they will look great im sure.

 

Rattle can is ok for a quick fix but in the event that , that doesn't work out in the future and you want to do it right all that rattle can paint needs to be striped off or it will lift when a urethane paint is applied. They should be taken off to be painted, if its like the flares on my 04 there are 7 clips that fasten them to the fender, and they break when you remove the flares, 7 clips on ea flare X4, seems the last time I replaced mine they were $1.50 ea. 5 red 2 blue per flare.

 

My quick fix has lasted two years in Colorado. Snowy winters, hot summers. Its never had the luxury of a garage either. All I did was follow the instructions on the can. The flares were painted off of the truck. Here's a pic. Sorry its a little dirty.

Prep work is the key. Clean them with some denatured alcohol, sand w/ some 400 grit, blow off w/ compressed air (make sure there is no moisture in the tank!) and paint. Wear some gloves too, or clean your hands really well with soap before handling/prepping the flares

There is also rattle-can bed-liner stuff. I have seen several trucks w/ their flares, bumpers, ect...done in stuff like duplicolor or rustoleum bed liner and it held up good for several years.

 

That looks great, especially given the sun's intensity here in CO!

 

think i know the answer to this one, but just to make sure, you can't color match the black, plastic fender flares right? different materials (matte vs polished)?

 

i used rustoleum truck bed liner out of a rattle can. removed them to spray and they're holding up great.

lots of scratches on the truck from branches, but fender flares dont show any signs on wear.

I like matte black, so the bed liner was a great choice for me.
