Ok, it may be a little early for camping, but I was inspired when I saw this in the free section of craigslist:

    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00098761

Measurements look pretty close to my longbed size.

Trimmed it down a little because it was a little longer than the bed.

Cut it in half for easy storage and setup.

Cut some wood for a custom fitting.

Has a nice incline feature that allows you to get back to stored stuff below.

    Drive in movie ready.

Now, I need to get a truck bed tent, then I am set.

Plenty of storage underneath and breaks apart nicely.

That is a Coleman full size air mattress in case anyone was wondering.

Seems pretty easy to make (minus the incline) even if you don't have the pre-made frame.

Was it the correct width? The length thing sounds easy, but I am wondering if you could show us more on the way you mounted it. Looks fun. rob

First off, it's never too early to be talking about camping :D

Second, that's a pretty sweet setup you have there. Don't know if it's really for me, since I like to over do it with the fire wood. Better too much than too little, especially since the provincial parks don't give it away like when I was a kid . It would be damn nice sleeping under the stars though.

    Edit:

On second look at those pics, I'm sure there would be plenty of room for a weekends worth of wood.

If you roll off that mattress, you'll bounce when you hit the ground! Excellent idea and an even better price!

ok, i think some more pix will answer some of the questions.

    pic 1 2x4's across

pic 2 use notch for 2x4 57" (if i remember right) was the perfect length.

pic 3 1x4 with another piece to fit into the rest of the notch still left empty.

extra piece also used as a spacer to push plank beyond the small side rail thing.
the width of the bed was a little short, so this extra piece will provide support.
the center of the 1x4 is held up by the wheel well.

pic 4 this how it fits. has to be snug.

pic 5 you can see how half the frame sits on the side rails.
