fed up! "its been a good ride"

i have a 4 banger with a 3inch lift and 33s. its a 2006. all sorts of dodads suchs a flowmasters and k&n cai to try to help but its still slow.tired of this sluggish piece of poop. should i get another tacoma with the 4.0l or get a full size truck HELPPPPPPPP.

 

If you like the Tacoma, get a Tacoma with a bigger engine.

A lot of full size trucks are still pigs, they're work trucks not race cars.

That said, I used to drive the 5.7 Tundra, that's a kickass engine and it's faster than the other trucks in it's class.

I got rid of it because I live in a small town and getting a truck that big around as my DD was a serious PITA.

 

Regearing would make a huge difference. No one can tell you if you should buy a new truck. Do you tow or haul anything?

There's always the URD supercharger.

yeah that 4 cyl will not be fast. if you want reasonable power, get the 4.0. If you want fast, get a car, or boosted x runner.

I get 40 more rwhp than a stock 4.0... OP, since you already have your truck and presumably otherwise like it, I'd really consider this blower.

I have all the pep of a v6 (although admittedly less low-end torque) and I still get 21mpg if I drive in a sane fashion highway and city.

 

wow, im from middlesex too man. that really threw me off seeing that. . . . . anyway, i got my 2nd gen 4.0ltr about 10 months ago and i love it. doesn't have the power my 4.7ltr jeep did, but it's plenty. really responds well when youre doing about 65 and go to pass somebody on the interstate. gas mileage is good too.

 

hell if you're not a creepy guy that would pull a gun on me and throw me out in the middle of 264 hwy i'd let you give mine a drive sometime this weekend if you wanted to. im about 10 miles south of mudcats on 39.

 

X2 ... I'd also make sure that there's nothing wrong with the engine.

There's a lot of people that are happy again after regearing. You can also try a LCE or DT header. Going all out would be a URD SC.

If you've already made your mind up then a Tacoma 4.0 that you can put a TRD SC on later if you want.

A friend of mine has a Silverado with a 5.3L he's happy with. I don't think it's as dependable overall though as a Tundra might be.

stock gears+33'' tires=slow

Exhaust and intake wont help slow. On a four cylinder the gains are negligible.

Also, you have to remember its a truck. If you want fast buy a sportscar.

 

^^^this!it is supposed to bump your horsepower up to 211 and the V6 is only about 20 hp more than that, if i had the money i would do it, i think it costs about 3k but may be worth considering over trading the truck in and getting stuck with payments on a V6 or fullsize...

 

Keep in mind, this is about 211 RWHP. V6 only gets 208 RWHP.

Gadget sticks the truck on a dynojet, Toyota does measurements at the flywheel.

But yeah, in any case, it's not going to be fast. I agree with that. Even non-supercharged v6's aren't gonna be fast, especially with 33" tires.

A regear or a blower will definitely let the truck get out of its own way though, so if that's what the OP is looking for, I'd compare the cost of either one against the cost of a new vehicle with all associated costs minus what he'd get for the truck he has now.

 

Don't blame the 4 banger, what do expect with huge tires and stock gears. Its not designed to ride 33's in stock form. Regear or go back to stock tires.

 

I had a 2.7 I now have a 4L 6 spd. there is no comparison it's huge gain in power I'm no longer afraid to pass any one. Gearing will make a difference in the 2.7 but it still will not have the power the 4L will If you keep your foot to a 4L you'll get shitty mileage but I have done as well as 22 with mine. There is a drag strip posting here of a super charged 4L of 12.7 that's enough to beat most BMW's

 

The 4.0 is what you need. Traded in my 99 taco 4 banger on a 07 4.0 Im happy as shit. I did drive the new f 150 365hp v6 I would give my left nut to have that mill in a taco. If you look at the 1/4 mile times on most of the big trucks its good for aMost are slow... Jim
