bed bolt issue, question about mount

is this part replaceable (o with a slit)? and how difficult would it be to do? should i have the dealer do it for me?

i installed d rings, but the middle left bolt wont go back in. i've swapped the middle right bolt and it goes in smoothly on the other side so i know the bolt isn't the issue...

i think the part that the bolt mounts into is cross threaded for the middle left hole and was wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

i don't want to drive around with one bolt not attached...

The bed bolts just mount to a welded-on nut on the underside of the bed.

It should not be anything to do with the metal sleeve you are seeing.

where the bolt is right now is about as far as i can go without forcing it... how do you think i should fix it? is it possible for the welded on nut to get cross threaded and the bolt be fine?

 

Anything is possible, but I can usually feel when I am about to mess up the threads. Did you notice an abnormal amount of resistance when you were trying to replace it last that you think could have caused this?

i did the d ring mod a while back and honestly cannot recall if it took a lot of pressure to reinstall...

i decided to put anti-seize on the bolts today, and that's how i discovered this issue... it seemed to come out real easy, but going back in is the issue.

i'm reading up on "how to fix cross thread" right now...

 

If the threads are indeed cross-threaded, you will need to re-tap the bolt hole.

Also, I would not worry about driving around with one bed bolt missing, I wouldn't do it forever, but doing it for a few days is not going to hurt anything.

Did something fall into the hole while the bolt was out??? Now causing blockage??? Just a thought

 

i'll look into re-tapping the bolt hole... anyone have the size by chance? edit: looks like it's m12 x 1.25 in case anyone is searching

i also tried loosening the 6 bed bolts and shifting the bed around a bit... still didn't help for just that one bolt.

i was able to look through and didn't see anything blocking...

 

got my m12 x 1.25 tap and cleaned out the thread... thanks again guys...

 

hey guys. the nuts that are welded inside my rails had to be cut out. so rusty that they can't be saved. anyone know what size these might be?

nuts are not sold by dealership. they are part of the bed and the sizes are not available.

 

I dont remember the size, but the newer bolts from the dealer are galvanized and Grainger was able to match a nut to it.

 

The first pic is the stock bolt and welded nut, the second pic is a new galvanized bolt with a washer and nut from Grainger. No diffenrence in the functionality, the original is just tacked in place.

@CVdukie, unfortunately I didn't record the part number anywhere. If you don't have a Grainger you may be able to take the bolt to a farm store, or big box store, and find a nut that fits. I know the guy at Grainger had a hard time finding a matching nut.

 

With the age my truck is getting on it, if it happens again I'll probably just go to the farm store and grab a similar bolt and nut and be done with it.
