Mild Lift vs shock length

Hello all, first time poster here. I've searched through the threads for this but I've had no luck so far.
I just picked up a 2000 Tacoma xtra cab TRD 4x4 with the 3.4.
First thing I need to do is get new shocks for her. So my question is this..
In the future I plan on putting a mild lift (under 3"). From reading through the forums I'm thinking of doing the Bilsten 5100 coils up front and an AAL in the back. If I stay under 3" of lift do I need to buy rear shocks that are longer or will the stock length be Ok? At what point do the stock length shocks limiting travel?
I'm starting with purchasing rear shocks then moving on to the front.
Any help would be appreciated..

Yes you will need to buy longer rear shocks, i belive the 5100's rear are for 1" or so. You might want to look into the 5150 series. Once you go over 1" or so you can hear the shocks overextending and slamming out.

 

you can also look into 5100s from the front of a jeep wrangler. they are 24.6" extended. I called DSMS and marco set me up with those. So far they have been great. Also, fully compressed they have 1.5" of shaft left while bottomed on the bumpstop.

 

Thanks for the info guys! So I take it a longer shock will be ok prior to installing the AAL? I would think it should be...

 

Huh? From Toytec's website:

"Rear D560 extended length 5100 Bilstein shocks work great with 1 to 2 1/2" lift."

From DSM's website:

"This 5100 Front/Rear Package is recommended when installing an AAL/Shackle in the rear."

5150's aren't necessary for a simple lift.
