He's been doing that football gig for a really, really long time. It wouldn't surprise me if they were looking for a reason to get rid of him and just took this as their opportunity.

I see what you're trying to say, and while I was agreeing w/ TacoPrerunner who used that word, I also fall into that category of sheeple. Out of sight, out of mind, as the saying goes. Our society tends to be media-fed. Since it's no longer making news, the oil must've disappeared and is no longer a threat. Like radiation from Japan. Or the Valdez spill. Or the tornado damage in Joplin.

The only thing I really care about here is the responsibility factor, and BP still is passing the buck. A number of people I met in the bayou were only compensated $4k in an entire fishing season that was closed due to this event. That's nothing compared to their typical wages. That doesn't seem right, and proof of further damage is held in my hand in that photo.

Yet again, there's a feeling of helplessness. It's also not my battle (self-centered, right?) since I don't make money in that area, nor do I eat seafood; but it's still enough of an event to try and keep it in the public consciousness.

    This.
It's not so much that people are blind to what is going on, it's more of, what can we do? I know I personally can't travel to Japan, Haiti, New Orleans and on and on and on to help them all out. I know many people are suffering, but beyond donations to the Red Cross and/or other agencies what else can the average person do when we all have our own issues to deal with? Would I be a better person if I make a new post about Japan's radiation issues every day?
Sorry to rant, but the whole 'sheeple' thing is so pompous and condescending that it's use immediately alienates the audience you are trying to reach.

Yes, I actually used "sheeple" twice and in this instance IMO is a very valid adjective for everyone only concerned with what is shown on the news WHILE it is being shown and consider what is being hyped by media to be gospel which constitutes a big percentage of folks. Lemmings any better of an adjective? If the foo shits, wear it...........We don't have to rant or make threads or posts daily nor is pretending it has gone away and doesn't still pose a problem down the road & believing BP did all they could to make it right very realistic either.

while you have some points, there is another side of the coin. last semester i took an environmental economics class, which resulted in me sleeping a good bit and thinking reading the entire text book the night before the exam would help . . . . however, we did learn and have to present about the BP oil spill and it was pretty interesting from that angle. you see, they almost don't care anymore if there are dead penguins and tweetie birds laying everywhere because the media behind it is what really killed that area. i forgot the stat on it, but i know from my research i found that for every commercial related to the spill, it's going to take some $100,000 worth of positive "the beaches are clean! everything's normal again" messages to counter the negative perspective people see on tv. the biggest problem down south is not oil rocks in the bottom of the ocean, let kevin costner deal with that; it's the fact that nobody is down there spending money again. so once they were able to make BP look like they did a good enough job, they went hush hush as quick as they could to try and make up some of that lost revenue asap.

    .
I agree on both of your points, BP got away with what they did because of the oil industry lobby in Congress, there was no real plan for handling a deep water well disaster because a watered down Congress didn't legislate anything to put teeth into enforcement. the worst part of this disaster is the lies that somehow bacteria ate the oil or somehow that it's out of sight out of mind. It's bullshit, they, along with a limp-dicked government screwed those people out of their livelihoods. They did nothing wrong, they're Americans, just like you and me, those people in NO are Americans too, somehow we have let ourselves be spoon fed lies and taken it as gospel.
Next up is "fracking is safe", sure if you like being able to light your well water on fire, and the big pipeline from Canada to Texas? Ummm, let me get this straight, the Environmental Impact Report was written by the company that wants to build it, go ahead and believe it if you like, but don't come crying when the fucking thing blows open and ruins your local ecosystem.

Aren't they still making a small effort to clean it up? I know they were just a few months ago. There's definitely still tons of tar balls on the barrier islands. All they can do now is pick them up. I just try walk around them. Also, I'm pretty sure fishing has been opened back up, so what's the big deal?

I've worked for BP on multiple occasions before this incident happened. They were some of the worst for being super super anal about having a clean site and reporting the smallest incident.

But what do I know, I've only been in the oil industry for over 6-7 years now.

The problem with the media is they've become a profit centered industry just like anything else , it's not about just reporting the news, it's about the big headlines that will get the most attention in order to keep network sponsors. That's a seperate issue all together. You'd be a fool to think that what you see on your television is the only news out there and that it's always 100% accurate.

We as a society created the petroleum problem by slowly making ourselves dependent on it. The reason huge oil corporations exist is because of we the people. I'll break it down, machinery and internal combustion engines were once an emerging technology just like computers, electronics, and the internet. It made life easier, so we the people bought into these new technologies, thereby making life easier as well as forcing ourselves into becoming a helpless petroleum consumer with every new invention that we incorporated into our day to day lives.

I'm not in support of the oil companies, I'm just playing devil's advocate, because the reason Exxon and BP had the power to get away with what they did is all of our faults indirectly. If you don't want to contribute to the problem, don't buy anything that petroleum based or relies on it to be made, let me know how that works out for ya

Is everything about the petroleum industry destroying our environment ? Yep.... Is there a whole lot we can really do about it? Not really

Oh yeah, almost forgot, you think BP is Satan for what their rig did to the Gulf coast of the country YOU live in ???? Go do a little research and take a look at what Shell is doing to Africa... Our little Gulf region is just a scratch comparatively

A whole lot of THIS^. I stopped watching the news when I saw a report on the latest American Idol results.

I'll never forget that moment either. I was at my parents' house when it came on. I turned to my parents and said, "Wait, American Idol? That's not news, it's a TV game show. They might as well tell us who won the Showcase Showdown on The Price is Right."

    Good discussion, btw. :)

No, the policy changes enacted by regulatory organizations put a ton of good people out of work.

Most of these changes / new regulations were a complete and unnecessary overreaction to the spill. Estimates say nearly 2 million jobs would be created within 6 months if these new regulations were lifted tomorrow!

How do you over react to the death of an eco system. What are these 2 million people going to do? Drill for more oil to pour into the gulf? Until they put precautions in place instead of greed I'll agree with the ban. I’ll believe a corporation is a person when Texas executes one.

I blame big oil spills even though natural seeps are double and other forms of oil saturation cause much more damage. Ban planet earth. Ban humans. LOL

The graph below shows how many millions of gallons of oil each source puts into the oceans worldwide each year

An ecosystem did not die. Have you been to the Gulf coast lately? The seafood is as healthy and almost as plentiful as it has ever been.

We have been drilling in the Gulf for over 100 years and do you know how many major spills there have been? ONE! With these odds, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than to live long enough to see another spill like this.

I'll leave the Texas comment alone...I mean come on, Maine, are you guys even really part of the U.S.?
