I am new to this message board, new to this truck as well as 4WD's. I am in the process of assessing a used "04 double cab, 6 cyl. automatic. No snow, ice, or sand in the area right now to test the system. Is there an easy way to assure that the 4WD system is not damaged and functioning properly? Thank you.

Engage the 4WD- you will notice the ride getting "rougher" and the engine will get louder.

Slam that bitch into 4L and press the accelerator pedal..if you go nowhere fast then it's good.

That wouldn't check your front driveline necessarily....

something with the ADD or the cv's could be amiss..

that would tell you your t case was engaging though

Ok, turn the wheel some, you'll feel the binding.

    Done deal.

It's really not that hard, it's simple as fuck.
Everybody in the entire world makes it SEEM so hard.

A stock truck 99% of the time isn't going to have a broken front diff or case..it's pretty hard to break them(unless your doing donuts in 4L on pavement while dumping the fuck out of the clutch)..so long as your case engages in lo range...then 4WD is FINE

I converted my prerunner to 4x4, I feel I understand the 4wd system pretty well, does that count or do I still have to leave?

The Vacuum and electronic actuators have been known to fail...

    Edit: Why Edit??

and I'm just giving you a hard time..I'm aggravated at work and using TW as a release.

Plus I drive a 89' Pickup..I ain't got none of that bullshit actuator crap. Manual hubs, Manual case, Manual transmission. Ready to fucking rock your motherfucking socks!

You can roll a few feet forward and reverse in front of your house to test if the lights go on, you hear the click or thump... Also try low range and the locker if you have an Off Road TRD. The locker is the most difficult to engage and disengage, typically taking a few attempts. Just roll forward and back in front of your home or work... Avoid turning the wheel on dry pavement. Better yet, test during rain or snow, then you can turn some while moving... turning while still or moving slow will be difficult in 4WD unless the surface allows the tires to slip.
