Aftermarket Brake Calipers

I need to replace a sticking caliper on my truck and I'm curious if anyone has experience with aftermarket caliper from any auto parts store. Called the local dealer and they want $423 for a new oem caliper so I'm exploring my options before pulling the trigger. I was hoping they would have access to remanufactured oem but they told me they don't for that particular part. What has your experience been with aftermarket calipers on any of your vehicles, not just Tacomas? Thanks for the help TW.

 

I've used either Advanced Auto or Autozone in the past (can't remember which) but they charged $60 for a new caliper plus you had to turn in your old one. Worked great but that was a little while ago and for a Chevy full size.

 

Most calipers will come with new pads and no telling the quality of the pads. I would put new pads on both sides while your at it.
No experience with using the calipers but sold them at oreillys back in high school. Don't remember any negative feed back.

 

Great thanks guys. I was definitely planning on changing pads and rotors while I'm at it. The right rotor is getting pretty chewed up from the dragging pad. Probably take the opportunity to throw some extended SS lines on too since I'll have the system opened up anyway. I looked at the ones Oreilly's has online and I am also going to look at some other options online before buying. I can replace both calipers for the price of one oem unit so i'll prob do that to keep everything matched. Still can't believe they want so much for one at toyota.

 

which side caliper is the bad one????
check ebay, crauglist,ect or local junk yard
our calipers are expensive for our trucks they use the 4 pistons

 

Passenger side caliper is bad. Thx hadn't checked Ebay yet.

 

I had to have both of mine replaced on my 09 , luckily I still had a couple weeks of warranty left

 

That is lucky cuz apparently from the price they are pretty proud of them. How many miles, or km were on the truck when u replaced them? I'm at 85k miles.

 

50k kms or about 31k miles

Well sounds like mine didn't fail "prematurely" i guess... biggest bummer is its eating into my rear suspension mod money!

Gonna try to get parts ordered tonight. Anymore thoughts on aftermarket vs oem. We spend so much time and money upgrading our trucks, I just don't wanna feel like I'm downgrading! I also don't want to spend tons on factory parts if the cheaper stuff is reliable.

 

well if you had the option oem is always best...but i see no problem with an aftermarket caliper.....

Rock auto. I will check them out. Just got home for the night so ill be able to do some digging hopefully.

 

Went with Centric brand Calipers loaded with the Centric Posi-Quite pads, Brembo rotors, and still need to order SS lines. Discountbrakes.com. I'll try an post an update after install to give my initial impressions of the aftermarket components. Thanks for the help.

Are people running extended lines in the front with CO lifts? I'm know they are the right thing with a 3" in the rear but my lines don't seem to be too short on the front...

 

I'm not running extended brake lines on mine but I'm running Eibach's on 5100's at 0 so only 1.6" of lift. I would guess it depends on if you have enough play to feel comfortable that your stock lines are long enough. SS brake lines help braking performance since they don't swell under pressure thus forcing all the pressure toward the piston.

 

Thanks. I'm familiar with the benefits of SS lines. Just curious about the length. I've wheeled my truck with the stock length lines and cycled thru all the travel without any problems. Just curious what others are running.

Ordered up wheelers brake line kits front and rear. I'll be glad to have a healthy yota again when I get the new parts on!

 

Swapped rotors, calipers, and front lines with no change in symptoms...awesome. Went back to the drawing board and figured out I've got a bad wheel bearing. Front right wheel bearing is going out causing the rotor to wobble in the caliper when that corner is loaded going around left hand turns. The wobble spreads the pads beyond normal tolerances which means more travel is required to engage the pads with the rotor, more travel than one cycle of the brake pedal provides. A second depression of the pedal returns braking to normal. It's been a long road to diagnosing this problem but I suppose the result is not bad since I now have all new brakes up front for no more than the price of parts.

The aftermarket reman calipers seem like they are every bit as legit as the Toyota stuff so I'm glad I went that route. Now to do a bearing job. Hopefully that'll be the last time the front end is apart for a LONG time.
