I see where your coming from, but it's still not enough to impress me. The phone just seems like an Android wannabe IMO. Hopefully the Iphone 5 will be out in time for my next upgrade so I can make a decision on whether to stick with Droid or go Apple.

Are getting it with a new contract? It would suck to start a new contract with the 4s, knowing the iPhone 5 comes out early next year. If your dead set on iPhone, i'd just sit tight if I were you.

Sounds to me like the only thing keeping you from Apple is the 4G connectivity and *maybe* screen size. We've both essentially made the "anything you can do, I can do" argument. Presumably, the iPhone5 should have a larger screen to match the size of the Droids. In my eyes, larger screen option + 4G x iOS5 and further iterations = the death of Android.

And an argument of the software being open/closed is a moot point as 95% of users/consumers will NEVER take the more advanced steps to "improve" what Apple/Android OS's have or haven't done. They just simply want it to work(not shut off, overhead, etc.) and be easy and intuitive to learn (a segment that Apple is leaps and bounds ahead in).

When it comes down to it, the people that call us Apple folks iSheep are just the opposite of the coin from the Windows loyalists. We ALL are sheep driven by the products we lust after!

This just means you will be stuck with the 4S, or stuck paying full price for the 5 when it comes out late next year. Just some food for thought.

Only the higher-ups at Apple know that for sure.

The iPhone 5 will almost surely have full 4G, be a full redesign (new form-factor), and include even more performance upgrades (probably bigger screen, better display, etc...).

Just like the 3G was to the 3GS (small performance boost), and the 3GS was to the 4 (complete redesign).

Not a dumb question man. A ton of people are in the same boat you are right now (upgrade to the 4S, or wait for the 5 next year), and I imagine the majority of them will give in and upgrade.

Something to keep in mind is what Cranium brought up - Apple products hold their value very well. You could feasibly get the 4S now, use it for a year and then sell it for more than you paid for it (due to the huge discount with new contracts/upgrades), then take the net gain from that to knock down the full retail price of the 5 when it comes out next year (you'll have to pay full price for it, though).

    Just some food for thought...

You're an idiot. One device with a larger screen will not kill Android. People like choice, and Apple doesn't give you that. So you can choose to have something that locks you down, or you can choose something that gives you options.

I choose Linux/Android. You can choose iOS, that's fine... but you're really truly out of touch if you think Android will just die overnight because Apple releases a device with a larger screen... which Lord Jobs doesn't seem to want to do. Meh.

Use what works best for you. Apple doesn't work for me. If it works for you, more power to you.

That's just silly. It actually would happen with any phone, especially a smartphone, bought under contract. Buying an iPhone (or any phone) from a wireless provider includes a contract which is why the price is reduced. Buying it without the contract would probably double or triple the price. So what's happening is you're selling your phone to someone who needs it without the contract, which is why it sells for a premium over what you paid.

    Here is a good example:

HTC Inspires selling for $239 without a contract (Android). The phone could be bought from AT&T for $99 when I bought my phone a year ago:

    I don't think it's silly.

Apple products hold their value better than any of their competitors products. Sure the discount when buying a new contract/upgrading helps, but this ideal applies to more than just phones.

I sold my MacBook Pro for ~$1200 (bought brand new for ~$1400) - it was two years old. I sold my two year old Dell laptop for $300 (bought brand new for $799).

As soon as Android/PC/etc start demanding certain criteria for the hardware that their software goes on, they will be true competition.

Set a DROID phone down next to an iPhone and you can instantly tell who cares more about their products.
