Not sure if someone already covered this, but my wife got her eye doctor to write a note stating that her eyes are extremely sensitive to sun glare, which is true to a certain extent. When she went to pay the ticket she showed the officer the note and explained her situation to him and he signed off on it. Tint remains and no fee, done deal.

Does CA do a yearly vehicle inspection like a good number of other States? If so how do you get the vehicle to pass with tint? I know back in the day when I was younger I had my windows dark as sh*t and I would have to go to a shop where I knew someone so I could pass inspection but I know most states have been getting tougher and tougher on the inspection stations and popping them with huge fines if caught doing crap like that now to the point where most shops rarely even want to risk it even if you know them really well.

I would have laughed at her and told her to buy a pair of sunglasses.

But, I'm also a dick sometimes, and I freely admit it.

That being said, good on her for at least keeping that note with her.

26708. (a) (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.

    Now, read this sub-section:

    (d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met: (1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent. (2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard. (3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays. (4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this subdivision and the certificate identifies the installing company and the material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meet the requirements of this subdivision and the certificate identifies the material's manufacturer by full name and street address. (5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed or replaced.

I have this 12% darkness film on all of my vehicles due to a skin condition. It's the only legal way to tint the front side windows of your vehicle in CA.

It is also illegal for the shop to apply the tint:
26708.5. (a) No person shall place, install, affix, or apply any transparent material upon the windshield, or side or rear windows, of any motor vehicle if the material alters the color or reduces the light transmittance of the windshield or side or rear windows, except as provided in subdivision (b), (c), or (d) of Section 26708.

As for those of you questioning the "reasons why" imagine youself as an Officer who has stopped a vehicle with tinted windows, at night and you are now making your approach. The windows are dark, you can't see inside and have even less of an idea of any dangers inside the vehicle than you normally do simply because you don't know and can't see how many occupants are in the vehicle, what they are or might be doing. Are they reaching under the seats, in the glove box, passing weapons or drugs, hiding open containers or just being nervous.

Or, just a motorcycle rider along side of a vehicle with dark windows. You can't see the drivers head turn, if he does, before he makes that lane change right into you.

Usually some tint shops (At least the ones I go to) have a life time warranty including if you need it to be removed and put back on for a violation. So find out where you did your tint if they can do that for you. Or just go to the doctor tell him you have a irritation to light and get a prescription for it. :D
