Shaving with straight razors

deffinately check out Straightrazorplace.com as i said above to someone else, it has all the information you could ever need and more, and if there is something they dont have, it most likely just hasn't been posted yet

 

I have been using a pair of jeans to sharpen my disposable razor and it seems to work pretty good.

 

You actually can sharpen those disposable razors right on your arm... just rub it backwards against your skin on your arm a few times... it is just like how they used to sharpen straight razors on cowhide.

Amazing shave. This thing is a damn dreadnought in terms of being beefy and heavy. (But not really, because actual dreadnought points are entirely different.)

it does, at least when i can manage to do the stropping right, spent too much on my razors (a lot of them, picked up from time to time) so i need a decent strop

its a Torrey, sweet razor, girlfriend found it in a box of antiques and i got it

other than that one, i love this one



it is one big Wad and butcher...unfortunately, the scales are gone and replaced with what you see

the balde says "the celebrated hollow ground razor" if you cant make it out

 

Can't make it out but it looks like a nice big meat cleaver.

I also got a Dovo, A Hugo Koller, and a NY Cutlery one.

For straights though.

3 DE razors. I got 2 of the ball type and one Fat Boy.

It is a big razor alright, Wade and Butcher made in England, good razor

i have a bunch of DE as well, including a gillette (cant remember the model) still in the box that was my grandfathers)

are your razors new or vintage?

 

I forgot that I have a Wade and Butcher too. 1800-1890.

Only one new one...all the others are vintage. And by vintage I mean fucking ancient.

Wow, your Wade and Butcher is even more massive in those pics! Damn.

And yes, a strop is a lovely thing to have. Gives the blade that extra comfort while shaving.

 

i have the one paddle strop, but cant seem to manage to do any good with it, I think the problem is I have no incentive to learn it because i want a hanging strop

and the other larger one, with a nearly mirror polish and a little rust on the blade is another wade and butcher

 

I would love to get into straight razors...but the cost of a good razor keeps me at bay for now. Maybe after I stop spending money on the taco...

 

My Wade and Butcher which is a phenomenal shaver was $60. Pack of Gillette Blades for my Mach 3 is $54.

Best thing you can do is straight shave. If you can start your say hacking off hair that's .5mm long with a blade that makes an exacto knife look like a fucking butter knife, anything else you do that day will be much much simpler.

Plus it's awesome.

 

dont let money stop you, go to antique shops, you may not have read it, but the most I have spent on any of my razors is 25, and that wasn't common, I found a lot of good ones for like 10-15, you just have to look

flea markets are good too

just look for Made in USA, England (will probably say sheffield, get it), germany

Total for getting started if you look hard enough, could easily be under 100 (correct me if i'm wrong)

you may want to have a razor found at an antique shop professionally honed though, i need to have mine done

This is pretty much how I feel about it as well.

I have been looking at ways to save money lately and trying to have a frugal attitude about every single thing I could potentially spend money on. For that reason, I am interested in learning how to shave with something other than a $$$ disposable razor.

But for now, I scare myself thinking of it.

 

could you recommend a good starter razor?

 

any good websites for good deals on straight blade kits?

I use Gillette hydro's 3 blades, they are pretty cheap. And one razor lasts me about 3 months. My skin isn't very sensitive so a dull razor doesn't bother me at all.
