What's a good way to temporarily fix a scratch

So I had an icedent were I scratched my hood pretty badly and was wondering what's the best way to paint it temporarily until I can afford to take it to the body shop. Thanks

 

I'm assuming it went down to the metal so you cant buff it out?

How big is the scratch? I would mask it off, sand it then put a coat of primer on the scratch. If you want it to look semi decent get some matching paint in a spray can and spray it.

 

That's a good idea it's about a foot long with a few other scratches

These chip and scratch products can work pretty well, in some circumstances. I like Dr Color Chip a little better.

This place sells paint in spray cans that will be a pretty close match to your factory paint; metallic paint is a lot more difficult to match than non-metallic.

You might be able to find a body shop to do a quick prep and spray for a reasonable amount of money and that will likely look better than any of the above options.

 

Just use touch up for now till you repaint it

 

hood is easy to repaint, since you can take it off. A rattle can base coat + clear coat will do a very good job on a hood. I suggest that you put some touch-up paint to alleviate rust in that area.

If you just wanna do a touch up, you can sand down the scratches, touch up paint locally, sand down joints, touch-up clear coat locally then sand down joint. This can do a pretty decent job.

 

Primer doesn't stop rusting, you need to keep oxygen away from the metal and primer is permeable. Only epoxy primers are non-permeable, I'm not sure how common or available it is.

If the body shop is going to fix it eventually, seal the metal with some paint. If it won't be that long before you bring it in, stick your finger in some vaseline and run it along the scratch. It will keep the metal from rusting and will be a lot easier for them to get off, they can just wipe it off with some lacquer thinner or something similair.
