I like the lame justifications about "gee, it's only one spill" and "more oil seeps out of the ocean floor or what we pour down the drain", or "gee, the fisheries bounced back", stick to the party line kids, have at it, really. Shall we just forget about the fact that nothing has changed to prevent this from happening again? Or that fucking up people's lives or screwing up and ecosystem is only a crime when individuals do it and not corporations? Or forget that you have created a huge dead zone in the gulf?

The people who caused this should be brought up on charges, tried, and thrown into fucking prison, doesn't matter how much fucking money they pay, it's a criminal act, period.

I watched a documentary on the spill, and it was actually very easily avoidable.

The BP guy on the rig told the rigs captain (remember, BP didn't own the rig, Transocean did) to move faster than the rig was designed for. IMO, both parties are at fault.

I watched probably the same documentary as you did, it was Halliburton, Transocean and BP, you're right, there was pressure to move faster and let's not forget, it cost 11 guys their lives as well. It's my point exactly, taking shortcuts in the interest of saving money constitutes criminal negligence, they knew what could happen should that well head blow, the biggest problem is that working at those depths is technically much more challenging and they (thanks to lax regulations), didn't have diddly in place to deal with a blown head at that depth.

As for an above poster who asked what I am doing? Well, other than the outright disgust at all things political in this country, I would like to see a Congress that is not bought and sold by lobbyist, till then, I buy less plastic, buy local when I can.

While I'm worried about the environment (yes, I definitely spent a lot of time this year dealing with seafood from the Gulf by living ON the Gulf), I'm even more worried about the impact on the people in the surrounding areas. Mainly, the fiscal impact on the fishermen. The BP payout was disgustingly low, IF they got paid out. The number of fishing boats dropped drastically afterwards as the final nail in the coffin (behind Katrina & Rita).

I was reading some news on my iPhone yesterday and found this timely piece:
    http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/features/2011/09/201192913263037831.html

I can't say for sure about any of this, since I'm neither doctor nor scientist, but I do know what I've seen first hand by the numerous tar balls found throughout the Gulf, and by meeting a ton of people who depend on fishing in the Gulf.

Can we stop oil production to the extent it's so necessary for our survival? Probably not in our lifetimes. Should we? Why not try? At the very least it wouldn't put us at the mercy of foreign countries like Saudi Arabia, or the new Iraq/Egypt (yes, yes, I know abt all the oil in Alaska and in the Gulf).

Again, though, my main point is the people affected by this accident and how responsibility has flown away with the news.
