Took all the chrome off my grille, now time to color match it. Here is how it's done.

Thing you need- Water,High PSI Pressure Washer,Toyota Tacoma with Lame Chrome Grille,Beer.

Step1: Take chrome grille off tacoma.
Step2: Sand any edge of the grille until it is black color.(sometimes you don't have to do this step)
Step3: While using a 15-25 degree tip begin to blast at the edge on the grille. Sometimes you can just blast the middle.
Step4: You will see the chrome beginning to peel up and fly away. (thick tinfoil like)
Step5: Keep working at it until you get all the chrome peeled away,i used needle nose pliers to pick out the tiny pieces in the cracks.
Step6: Post your picture on this thread!

    Hope this helps!

Someone who worked for my mechanic a few years ago told me that a good way to strip chrome plating off these types of grilles is to give it a brake fluid bath. Soak it for a while and the stuff just peels off. Does that sound right? I've never tried it.

(Now that I think about it... he may have said tranny fluid. Hmm...)

It might work. I've used oven cleaner to strip chrome of plastic before. Someone has to be a guinea pig ;)

I don't think tranny fluid would work, maybe brake fluid as it's caustic. The trick there is it may deform or soften other parts of the grill it comes in contact with. The stuff leaves spots and discolors auto paint so it's pretty strong.

I thought of sanding or otherwise removing chrome from my grill too, but then it would just be rattle can paint on top. I'm not skilled enough with spray paint to match the factory-painted hood.

I have this feeling if you left brake fluid on it, it would start eating the plastic too...

    DEAR TACOMA WORLD.

    OP IS A FUCKING GENIUS!

It works. Just have to get under an edge of the chrome and it starts to peel right off. Its like a foil coating.

    ITS WORKING!!!!!!!!
