I was wondering if a ground wire is needed if i made my own mount for my antenna and it connects to the bed rail system? Wouldn't the bolts tapped into the bed rail which is tapped to the side of the truck bed be enough ground? Or do I need the little wire coming off the bottom of the antenna?

Here is a pic of how/where I mounted my antenna and the mount I used. I didn't have to drill any holes on the truck at all, just trimmed up the plastic bed cap a little to clear the bracket. It's techniclly ground to the sheet metal of the fender and any metal the fender touches by just screwing the coax to the antenna mount. I didn't need to run a seperate ground wire.

I did drill a second hole in the bracket so I could use another mounting bolt. That bolt goes through the hole/slot that is already in the top of the rail slider. A 3/8" bolt fits in that slot perfect.

My SWR's are flat. The bracket I'm using is not as beefy as I would like and I'm going to make my own bracket out of 1/4" steel and a little wider for a more stable/rigid platform.

Well after getting sick of looking at my Mt Rushmore sized Cobra wedged between my seats, I have decided I can live with it in top of the dash.

What I'm going to do is use that tool box mess mat liner stuff on the whole underside of the radio. Then spray paint the ugly gold colored mounting bracket black, but not the bottom of the bracket, just whats visable.

I have a few pieces of right angle/corner foam which is about 1/2" thick. Two pieces of that will go at the back top edge of the radio where it bumps up to the windshield. This will keep it from hitting the glass, as well as allow to defrost the windshield.

The reason the bottom of the bracket will be unpainted is for red 3M foam tape. If I ever need to remove the bracket just use heavy duty fishing line or wire, to breal the tape free from the dash without scraching the dash, then wd40 to remove any residue.

I have the Wilson 1000 roof mount, not magnetic mount. Picks up and sends from really far.

I mounted mine in the center console to the back of the console. Since I don't have the inverter under the console I mounted my external speaker where the 120v inverter would normally go pointing at the "vent". You would never be able to tell I had a CB other than the antenna mag mount base on the roof. I remove the antenna when I'm not using the CB because it will hit when pulling in my garage. I just ran the cable in through the sliding window. I have a camper shell/cap so you can't see it.

i doubt that i can talk really far with the magnetic and i can hear from very far away at least better than a bolt on antenna
