OK so I recently bought a 2006 certified pre-owned Tacoma. It is speedway blue and the paint is in excellent shape, some small scratches/dings, but nothing major considering it is a few years old.

After examining my truck closely there is some paint around the windows/mirrors where it looks like it may have been taped off kind of crappy for a paint job, also noticed some paint on the under carriage below/behind the running boards.

Just wondering if Toyota would repaint a truck to CPO it, ran a Carfax, and I know they don't always report everything, and there were not any accidents or anything reported.

Already put about 1500 miles on the truck and I love it, was just curious to get some peoples thoughts.

    Thanks

You should be able to pull up the factory color through the VIN number, I can't remember if the information decal on the door jam has the color code on it or not.

Did that and it matches, was just curious if they would have re-painted it. Either way my truck is Speedway Blue and the paint looks great as you can't see anywhere on the truck that paint may have been blended or anything.

I will try to get some pics up of what I am talking about this weekend.

i think there is a color code on the tag inside the driver door. someone may have just painted it. if its pre owned certified, bring it to the dealer and have them check it out

CPO just means that is passed the inspection checklist that toyota dictates.

Dealers will use mobile touch up services very often to recondition used vehicles in order to sell them at retail ( and the cost is put in the selling price as well).

    Here is the checklist http://www.cars.com/go/advice/shopping/cpo/images/toyota-inspection.pdf

It indicates that the paint must be swirl free and smooth, if not, it can be marked for repair ( ie repaint, or touch up). Once it is repaired, it can still be certified. It also says that the vehicle must be free of improper paint repairs and mismatched colors. and They have their opinion of what a proper repair is ( most consider mobile touch up to be so , I do not agree)

According to this, the checklist is saved with the vehicle history, so you should be able to request the checklist from the dealer to see if it was actually repaired by them. But if the vehicle was repaired before hand to a factory level, it can still be CPO.

When I bought my 07 I saw it the day it was traded, and noticed some things. They were going to Certify it, but I asked if the price would be lower if they didnt, and it was. Personally, other than the extra warranty, its not really worth it, It just a once over on the vehicle.

Thanks for all the info, I have no concerns with my truck as it is in great shape for a vehicle with 60K miles on it. Was just curious if anyone was aware of their truck being repainted and then CPO'd.

Yeah I wouldnt be worried if it was repaired properly.

I have the drivers door on mine painted before I picked it up because of a poor touch up job. They worked well with me and took care of it.

    have fun with the truck
