Help leaking grease around inner boot on axle.

Just saw where my truck is leaking grease on the inner boot of axle. Its around the small part of the axle thats about big around as your thumb. It looks like the boot my have slipped and has a little dry rot. Does anybody make special kind of boots for lifted trucks.

 

I don't think there are special boots, but you can buy boots from the dealership for about 80 bucks. A little grease leaking is nothing to worry about, my cv boot was torn for 2 years and i wheeled the shit outta it and never broke it haha. Just ended up replacing it and bedding last week. Take a pic if you can so we can better understand what you're talking about

 

if the boot isnt torn yet, and its just the part you're telling us. go buy another clamp and tighten it.

Try take a look at the boot slide mod too

 

just looke at it and they are a little metal band that tightens up the boot and hold it on there. Looks like all it done was moved. I remember seeing a thread on here about that not to long ago on about how to stop the boot from sliding. Any body know the thread im talking about. Here it is its called the boot slide mode.

 

I think thats what look like happen the boot sled up and now its leaking grease.

 

there it is. What should i do. New boot? New boot and boot slide mod or just do the boot slide mod.

No, aint takin no chances going to the shop getting that fixed and going to change out the oil. If it leaks out all the grease the front end is going to go out on me. Also they are a lot of grease around it.

 

autozone has lifetime warranty on their boots. just get a set there and bring it back if it ever busts again. they'll replace it for free

 

As myself and alot of other people have said before, if you're going to replace the boot, you're better off just replacing the entire CV. The CV is hard enough to get out and replace the boot to begin with, and if it's already screwd up or you accidently screw it then you did all that work for nothin'.

So, my suggestion is that you get either a new boot clamp or a hose clamp to reclamp the boot. If you wanna get real froggy, get some speedy boot, which is the grease specifically for CV's(it's green) and inject it somehow into the end you are repairing. I would say use some sort of kitchen meat injector tool. You could probably find one at the local grocery store where they have all the pots n pans and stuff. The only down fall with a hose clamp, it will have the possibility of over time, cutting into your boot. If you can put the hose clamp in such a way that you can avoid that, then good on ya. If you get a hold of the right CV boot clamp then you can get a boot clamp tool made to tighten them up for fairly cheap.

I would say, as long as you stop any more grease from escaping your CV, it should be fine. Good luck.

 

One of mine leaked like that for a while after I put my lift on. It did not continue leaking though. I cleaned it up and have keep an eye on it. It has not leaked any more for over a year with many wheelin trips in that time.
