here's whats going on, vehicle in park, not running. i depress the brake pedal and there is a loud ass squeak that comes from the rear drum, this happens everytime i depress and release the brake pedal. i crawled under the truck to see if i could pin point where exactly it's coming from but no luck, and from what i could tell it appeared to be both sides but not 100% on that..

when im driving and apply the brakes it will happen but its not as noticable because of other noises. No brake squeaking while brakes are being applied for stopping like you would normally get from the front brake pads when they are bad/run down. I am not familiar with drum brakes and was wondering if this indicates the drum shoes are bad or something else going on with the brake system?
Im not having any trouble stopping or having to really depress the brake pedal in order to stop, brakes seem fine its just that damn squeak...
    Anyone?

The backing plates are dry. each shoe rides on 3 points. that's where the squeak is coming from. Need to remove drums and lube the contact patches with a little brake grease. Won't hurt anything.

It is pretty easy if the drums are not seized or a big rust ridge.
    PITA if they are.

How many miles on the truck? Mine's an '02 with 114K and still on original rear brakes. I inspected them a couple of weeks ago (really easy as Tacoma Mike mentioned), mine still have 50% of the shoe surface left.

I would say, it you are not having any issues stopping or pulling to one side, you are probably OK if you can tolerate the squeak.

lol mine has just turned 114xxx last week... well since it seems to be a somewhat easy fix if the drum face comes off, it's prob worth a try b/c i really dont like the loud squeak it's bad...

    Sounds about right.

Yeah, give it a try. Loosen (not remove yet) the lug nuts on both rears, put the axle on jack stands, then remove the wheels. The drums may slide off at that point. If not, tap/pound on them with a hammer to break'em loose. That is all it took on mine.

I would suggest having a couple of aerosol brake clean cans handy to spray it down and clean everything up. You can then do a proper inspection. Good luck Man!
