don't buy the "clogged air filter don't affect you're mileage BS, particularly when the info is coming from gov. research! A coating of dust and dirt create an extra layer of filtering? Ok and pigs fly!

 

Any vehicle with MAF sensor regulates the amount of air let into the combustion chamber. Hence a filter can be VERY dirty before it causes a problem. A filter with 10K on it will filter better than brand new filter. It has had a chance to let micro particles fill the pores of the filter, thus trapping the particles that are even smaller from entering the combustion chamber. You can completely remove the air cleaner assembly and no more air will enter than if you have everything in place.

 

such a scientific approach you've taken in your argument. Wouldn't the government want us to buy more filters to help stimulate the econ?

go test your hypothesis and report back with findings.

 

my afe came with a plastic tube for better flow and a new location 4 the mafs clamps and rubber sleeves then a box and rubber seals it took place of the origonal air box my hood closes fine but its up a tad bit higher than normal tight fit but im happy with it ill try 2 post sum pix when i get time

 

ran the crap outa the little truck this week had a real lead foot filled her up after work done the math getn 22mpg since i added the gforce chip driveing crazy cause of the added power i generaly get around 28mpg ill go easy on it next week and see what i cum up with only problem is thier already selling winter blend fuel which sux

Ends, I've noticed an improvement of my 2007 TRD 4X4's performance and acceleration with premium vs. regular. The engine will run fine on regular, but for those who track their mileage carefully, the increased performance translates to lighter action on the accelerator. The 87 or 89 octane means lower knock tolerances, so the computer retards the motor's timing to prevent the knocking. This makes acceleration less lively and efficient compared to 91 octane. Just an observance from a humble semi-educated motor head.

 

So is this going to translate into a saving $$ after you add the extra cost per gal or just a slight increase in mpg but not enough to cover the extra cost ?

I think the government got pressure from the damned environmentalists because there are to many air filters in the land fills.

 

Just thought I'd post an update here as I've just had a crazy change in my MPG.

2010 4cyl MT Prerunner.

I use 0-20 synthetic since new, removed the secondary filter, and kept my tires inflated to 34lbs. My travels have been 80% highway and my MPG was stuck for a long time at around 22.5 MPG.

At 30k I changed out the trans & diff with redline synthetic, no change.

Then I decided to try upping my tire pressure to approx 42lbs, which bumped me up to 23.4 MPG but I could only test 1 tank.

I recently changed jobs and now commute still 80% highway, but it's 55 mph so I cruise at 62 mph. Before I traveled on a faster highway and I'd cruse at 70+ mph. This apparently has made a HUGE difference. Along with the higher tire pressure, keeping the speed down has resulted in getting 27.4 MPG. Hopefully this repeats and there's nothing wrong with the car (running extra lean somehow?). Anyway I track it every time so we'll see.

Upper end intakes come with a replacement mass airflow sensor ready tuned for the filter.No bolt on part is going to give you the gained HP or feul maximizing that it says unless its tuned.But all and all a drop in k&n is still going to give you more air than a stock filter saving gas and a small gain in hp(a new vehicle will self adjust to some dagree).You do need to keep them oiled.Win win life time warranty just need a cleaning kit.Really dont need them bigo round off the hook filters that dont have a box.Pointless for a 4x4.But if you want the true benefits of an aftermarket performance mod look for one that comes with the maf sensor they run about 400 ish.Some vehicles dont need to replace maf just need a program it.(like running a new performance pipe on your dirtbike or something its pointless if you dont change the jets?)

 

I always keep my tire pressure 4-5 lbs under max.Just for tire wear.I also only use castrol synthetic.(300 thousand hard mls before any problems on my yota v-6 4x4 which was the timming belt)My truck liked 75-80 cruising speed and saved the most feul.But hard to tell these days gas just is not what it use to be.

better mileage secret for any car is here, i used for about 10 years now and it works fantastic, even my home generator, it cleans the engine and kills 60% emisions. just read try and see results, by the way keeps engine oil like new. mix 1 ounce per 10 gals of gas and on second or third tank you will tell. a good friend chemical eng. read this and analised and told me why they dont tell this to the public! this is for my taco buddies to enjoy.

 

I think the V6 would be a different animal altogether.

The thing about the prerunner in particular is that it has the aerodynamics of a picknick table turned sideways. The little 4 banger has to work so much harder at 75mph vs 65 mph that you pay a huge penalty in MPG. That's my theory anyway.

I would think that with the V6 would not matter nearly as much under the same conditions.

 

Scientists with accurate repeatable methods don't find any benefit with acetone.

The link you provided seems to say they are doing their testing with a scangauge. Fact is a scangauge, though a great tool does NOT measure true fuel use, it just estimates and the user verifies or calibrates the estimate to actual tankfuls.

If I use 10% ethanol fuel my fuel adjustment hovers around -8%. If I switch to better 100% fuel the scangauge doesn't understand that until I do another tank adjustment. With pure gas the adjustment is more like -2%. It won't be able to show a change if acetone were added to a tank. If indeed acetone were to increase fuel economy, when you fill up again the fuel adjustment would be off.

 

anyone else tried the gforce chip yet ? i can honestly tell a big power gain in my 4banger
