Oh no-The servers I know personally all think like I do-Do the best you can and reap the rewards of that-and I think it sucks when a server does a good job and folks don't tip. I think it sucks when the kitchen is slow cause the server can't fix that.
But usually the folks who say "Tip everytime, no matter what" are servers.

yeah I get what your saying, i know servers that have that attitude..just not all of them :) and yeah it definitely sucks when your tables blame you for things that are completely out of your control!

Last night I tiped my server 30%, even though she asked us to move tables so a larger party could sit together, She got us a free round for it and comped. a half a beer. ! and was a good sport having to deal with us.

OK, heres a question for the servers. Be honest and explain how exactly how you handle these situations day to day: (One assumption: In this area it is common and acceptable to leave tips on the table when leaving. We are not expected to give it directly to the server unless we choose.

    1. Customer's lunch bill comes to 11.49 and
    a. He hands you a $20 to pay it or
    b. He hands you $12 to pay

What is your practice for making change in these instances?

    2. Customer's lunch bill comes to 11.49 but now the amount already includes a restaurant add-on 15% tip (because it was a large party at an office luncheon)

    a. He hands you a $20 to pay it or
    b. He hands you $12 to pay

What is your practice for making change here?

No matter what the bill is and how much cash they give me I always ask if they would like change, I never assume the rest is for me

A lot of them do assume it's their's around here, especially if it's only a small amount. Nothing aggravates me more about a server than when they do that without asking, even if it is only a few pennies.

Usually it's when they know you are already paying the 15% add-on that they do this. What they don't seem to realize is their tip almost always will be larger in the end if they just go ahead and bring back the 51 cents change. They don't pull this trick on normal bills. I assume they figure people will get up and leave, and they will have a whopping 51 cents tip. I know I would do that.

Yeah, I would never do that. My rule is, if they give me cash the first thing I ask is if they would like change...that should just be common sense I would think. You don't just take peoples money unless they make it clear to you that it is for you to keep.

I tip as I see fit, which is usually still pretty high. I am in the industry so I am able to spot things like a new server, or a server overwhelmed. So when I see something like that going on, even if I get the shittiest service ever I still tip high. Guys being a server is harder than you think, and no I am not a server. Yes there are some really sucky servers and I worked with a few. Most often than not The servers are working hard to support themselves and/or a family. I am not saying this to get people to increase tips but to realize that serving is definatly not the easiest of jobs. BTW tip the cooks!!!

I tip based off service. If I only see you to take my order and deliver my food, I leave near nothing. A good server, I will tip well.

i usually tip 15-20%, but our servers that get minimum wage is at least $9/hour. not sure what it is anymore.

However i will say that i think gas jockies are more deserving and get tipped way less. I worked as one for a few years while i was in university and it was full serve only. I busted my ass of 8-10hours a day in hot days and freezing days. People didn't even have to get out of their cars and i would make maybe $5 or $6 a day. But once again our minimum wage as around $8 or something like that.. just my 2 cents

Its all spread out in a situation like that. Servers and bartenders alike have to tip out food runners, expos, and bussers. So if you leave a shit tip no one that helped you out will get paid for their service to you. If your food came out the way you wanted it, your drink was full, and you didn't wait forever( could be server's fault or kitchens fault) then leave 20 percent. If shit was wack 10% if it was ok 15. Dont be cheapies.

No biggie - Just have alot of friends who serve. And yes, I agree, a server should put forth effort to earn a tip - I probably worded my phrase a bit too strongly.

I just believe if they do a decent job they deserve 20%...and use caution when leaving a penny or blatantly making a statement if you plan on returning to a joint. Those folks have much opportunity for revenge. :D

A good way to fix the tip/no tip problem is to include the gratuity in the cost of the food. That's how they do it in other countries. Your $20 steak will now be a $24 steak. Granted there will be no incentive for the server/busser/cook to provide good service because the tip is already included, but if they drive away customers with bad service then they won't be working too much longer. If a customer feels that the service was extraordinary then they can leave an extra "tip" above and beyond the bill. It's a simple way to weed out the cheapskates, it reports the proper tip income for taxes, and it ensures that restaurant owners will keep quality workers to make customers happy.

    You know exactly why.
I'm going to assume you're a bartender, so this argument will be futile, but..... what is exactly that a barteneder is doing do "deserve" a tip? They open a beer, or pour a drink, yet their job entitles them to extra money on top of their salary for what? The argument that you will get better service next time around is b.s as well, I alway tip bartenders very well, yet maybe twice in my ebtire life have I gotten a free drink from a bartender, or faster service, etc..... however, they instantly remember the guy that doesn't tip.
The whole tipping thing is a scam.
