WTF.. how does Smyth get a Game Misconduct for taking a hit from Kunitz.. Kunitz looked like he was coming in and going to go high and Smyth puts his arm up in a defensive position and Kunitz runs into his elbow .. that is crazy.

 

Next... The forehead numbers have got to go

 

Dude come on he elbowed Kunitz in the side of the head. Kunitz is too short to go high on anyone. The new NHL, nothing to the head.

 

Pretty lame if you ask me. Smytty was just protecting himself. Kunitz was taking a run at him, and when Smytty defended himself, Kunitz went down like he shot!! Then of course, he was just fine to play on the power play!!

 

I haven't seen the play yet , but if Kunitz had a possible head injury the new rules state he MUST go to the quiet room for observation .

This is where all these headshot bs rules fall apart .

The Oil still won so i'm not too pissed about it. Good start to the season. Won't be in the basement this year. haha.

 

Yeah, in the end we took home the win. Nice to beat a stronger team like the Pens - even if they were missing a couple of their main guys.

Dubby was pretty solid between the pipes. And it would appear that the Nuge is the real deal.

He still elbowed Kunitz in the side of his head, it is a penalty. I'm afraid though the NHL will start looking a lot like the NFL with this issue. The NFL is close to unwatchable with the way they protect the QB.

 

Why didn't Kunitz have to go to the quiet room then ?

That should be automatic if the player throwing the " elbow " is ejected .

 

Didn't realize that he got a game misconduct for that, that is lame. Double minor at most. If this is the way the NHL is going to be, I'm not paying for NHL game center this season.

EDM does have some good talent on that team.

 

That's what I was thinking. Kunitz ran Smytty, and Smytty was just raising his arms to defend from someone racing at him. It just so happened that Kunitz was a shorty, and Smyth's arm was a bit higher that he likely thought. As the ruling goes, it's also the responsibilty of the victom to not place themself in a bad spot. Kunitz did just that. It's funny to watch him go down like a sack of hammers - then be perfectly fine 1 minute later.

You right, should have been a double minor - and be done with it. But oh well. It's done. The Oil defended the 5 minute PP.

 

Yeah Kunitz went in for a check, even if he was back up in a minute, I'm sure having Smyth's elbow in his head didn't feel good.

I'm more concerned with how long the Pens will be w/o Crosby and Malkin.

 

Saw a report today that Sid is going to see the Docs about allowing him full contact in practice. But the same reporter mentioned they were likely to keep him out of the line-up for another couple/few weeks. I imagine they're really being cautious to not have another Lindros type situation.

Still not sure what's up with Malkin. Lower body injury was all I heard.

 

Didn't Malkin have ACL surgery over the summer ?

 

I think he had the surgery in late winter, or early spring. Likely going to have on-going issues for the next while.
